People, after servicing my 90ps TDI i can't recommend enough to change the air filter and fuel filters on a service. (and added injector cleaner)

Ford was supposed (according to schedule) to do it last year on my only (and ever) dealer service.

This year i decided to change all filters/ coolants/fluids etc as a major 90000 service (see previous post)

the fuel and air and oil!! filters were date stamped 2003. thanks ford.....

After changing, the difference in performance as a large as when i replaced the maf.

bloody brilliant and what a difference.

service it yerself and F8ck the dealers

I couldn't agree more.

I have found that my cars, always Ford, have run longer, better, and a damned sight cheaper by keeping them away from main dealers permanently.

I do however, use a small local garage for repairs having built up a high level of trust and mutual respect over 20 or so years.

If you are going to service the car yourself....what exactly do you need to do????

Depends whether it's burial Marriage or Baptism!!

Check your handbook. Usually it's Oil and Oil filter and depending on the service interval it could be fuel filter and Air filter. Cabin Filter also needs changing fairly regularly. You should also check all other fluids like Water, Power Steering etc. Check Aux belts - make sure they are OK and not frayed or damaged.

Hmmm, is there any chance you could spray the cabin (i presume its the pollen filter) filter with your favorite deodrant ???

I'm thinking it could be a better way of keeping a permanent, nice smelling car!

Hmmm... I understand the reference to Exorcism now - You must be a witch and get driven out of the village by angry mobs a lot - that explains the constant moving!! :20: :D

Well....the kids think that im a witch..and i must be capable of sorcery to make money dissapear and hubby to do whatever i ask of him!! :20:

Cripes MM..everyone does it.....how many threads have started on one topic and ended with another????

Ok, we in wrong place.....but so many times one problem interlinks with something else gone wrong.....so topics do deviate.

Back to servicing????

My servicing routine is to change the oil every once in a longish time and ignore everything else.

I find that an annual MOT tells me when brakes need replacing, usually at more than 2 yr intervals. Other than that, I wait for the warning lights or something to stop working although I do check the oil/ water every 3-5000 miles.

Most of my cars end up with 200k plus or die of old age or boredom and I do 30-50k per year.

Tyres do 60 - 80K and the only time I have problems is usually something that is inherited when I buy the car or If I let someone I don't know muck about with it and I DON'T DO THAT ANYMORE.

The only time I use main dealers if there is a guarantee which stipulates regular servicing.

I don't suppose that it would work for everyone but I've arrived at this over years of high mileage use and I do have a local garage I can trust.

firstly, do you do to drive 50K a year?

how do you get your tyre to last soooo long?

you know, if gorden brown gets his way then road tax for you would cost more than your house! :16:

(that mileage related thing)

I do a sort of service/trouble shooting thing which means I can do from 20 ot 600 miles in a day, mostly in a battered S reg Gal with 170k and no service history, the rest for pleasure in a 52 Ghia and a Picasso.

My old man taught me to drive, 45 years ago, as if I had a glass of water on the bonnet, and, while I don't hang about, I've always had good mileage from tyres and everything else. It's all a matter of being sensible. Just out of interest, I've had 2 Granadas, both bought at about 45K, and one did 180K on the original front brakes and pads, the other only managed 165K but that had been a fleet car before I got it.

As far as the tax thing is concerned, the majority of tax is through fuel, and they've abused and wasted that over the years, so, while there is no justifiable reason to increase road tax, I don't suppose that will stop the dishonest incompetant B

SWMBO has to take some credit. She soon lets me know if I do anything sudden like.. :)

The choice of car is also important. I doubt if it's possible to do anything like that in most models.
