I want to replace just the front locks , so its just the key that will be used in the lock its a late 1997 2.0 i aspen galaxy no remote locking no red key was'nt supplied with the car when we bought it . Thankyou Sue Quote
NikpV Posted May 25, 2006 Report Posted May 25, 2006 I think that there is a little lug in the mechanism which breaks off/wears. If you want to replace the locks you have two options1) replace locks and have a different key for those doors2) replace locks and get an auto locksmith to re-pin the locks so the other keys still work In neither case will the PATS be involved - this only applies to th key put in the ignition lock. Given the age of the car you probably don't need a red key - this system was early and pre 1997, after then a two key pats sysytem was used (you need two programmed keys to program a third and subsequent keys. Several posts recently about the locks just turning, I wonder if its possible to get an auto locksmith to repair rather than replace the locks - out of the question for ford though Quote
Guest red Posted May 25, 2006 Report Posted May 25, 2006 Hi NIKPV Thankyou for your quick reply Yes that's what i want to do just replace the front locks i dont mind having 1 key for the lock and original key for the ignition I have just phoned fords they quoted my Quote
NikpV Posted May 25, 2006 Report Posted May 25, 2006 Oh and by the way - have a look at this thread - removing handles - re-pinning locks Dont know the outcome yet Quote
Masked Marauder Posted May 25, 2006 Report Posted May 25, 2006 The locks just lock and unlock and set/unset the alarm if one is fitted. They are not connected to the Passive Ant-Theft System (PATS) that works on the ignition key only. There is a chip inside the key that when the key is turned in the ignition is read by a loop antenna round the ignition barrel. So in addition to the options above, you can change all the locks to a new matched set, and take the chips from any working keys ignition you have and swap them into any of the new keys. Quote
