sanjsanj Posted May 24, 2006 Report Posted May 24, 2006 hey guys! I asked someone to fix my ciggy lighter (for satnav, not for those things that cause BLINDNESS! lol)...When i got the car back, it struck me that I coud have easily pulled out that small black box underneath the radio and checked the connection....neway it was too late to fix by myself but i still pulled it out (curious) Under that a saw a silver enclosed kinda box, similar in size to the black thing I had just pulled out. Any ideas on what it might be? it has a small ford sticker on it I can get a picture if u want... Quote
Bigjeeze Posted May 24, 2006 Report Posted May 24, 2006 Wouldn't swear to it but it might be an amplifier - I believe the MK1's sometimes have this. Quote
Guest 3.5bullet Posted May 24, 2006 Report Posted May 24, 2006 silver box with cooling fins held in place by two fixings at the front and one at the rear? then its as Bigjeeze states it's the amp for the stereo Quote
sanjsanj Posted May 24, 2006 Author Report Posted May 24, 2006 it does have cooling fins but it doesn't seem to be attached to anything...while we're on the topic of amps, I was thinking of switching the standard ford RDS2007 with the VW upgraded version- a Sony..... Now in my mecedes, you simply pull the radio out, it slides out with reletively little force ,and its just a case of pulling the wires out.It doesn't seem to be the case in both the ford or the Vw (also mk1) how ever much force u apply, you're not gunna get it out.what can i do? heres another problem to make a right kerfufle of things: the sony comes with a 6disc cd....I'd like to fit this in my ford....the VW (96) has the multichanger fitted under the drivers seat.in the ford, the space under the drivers seat isn't there any more.now what do I do? another kerfufle: will the ford's amp work with the sony stereo? Quote
Guest 3.5bullet Posted May 24, 2006 Report Posted May 24, 2006 the space is still there under the seat! although the factory fitted CD changer is normaly fitted in the lidded storage bin above the jack on mk1's to remove the original radio you need the correct tools to release it from the dash, these can bought at halfords or shops in a similer vein, or do as suggested elsewhere and make a set from a wire coat hanger blue/green peter style the reason why the sony unit pulls out easily could be that the securing frame has not been fitted or the securing lugs for the frame have not been bent out to hold it in place?i dont think the ford amp will work with the sony unit? you can get adapter leads that will bybass the amp though Quote
sanjsanj Posted May 24, 2006 Author Report Posted May 24, 2006 so i guess i'll have to swap the ford stereo AND the ford amplifier 4 the sony stereo and sony amplifier...right?urm, can you suggest what to search for to find the relevent section on how to make tool/ release stereo? i guess its too hard to fit it in the lidded storage bin because the car hasn't got any original holes or wires in it....i haven't had a proper look at the space under the drivers seat of the ford (t reg) but would anyone know if its as big as Vw' sharan (p reg)? Quote
sanjsanj Posted May 24, 2006 Author Report Posted May 24, 2006 Also, do i actually need an amplifier or can i do without one? Quote
Masked Marauder Posted May 24, 2006 Report Posted May 24, 2006 The Ford amp is not good and low powered, better not to use it. Quote
sanjsanj Posted May 24, 2006 Author Report Posted May 24, 2006 The Ford amp is not good and low powered, better not to use it. So will the Sony be powerful enough to power the 10 speakers? Also, I've read somewhere on this site (ages ago) on how to remove the stereo but i dont know what to search for to find it again. Can you please point me in the right direction or tell me what to do with the coat hanger? Thanks!P.S i have and still am trying to search for it; what other people have talked about is sooo amazing that i just have to read it before i move on... Quote
NikpV Posted May 24, 2006 Report Posted May 24, 2006 (edited) OOps - where on earth did this quote come from ??????????????? Not on my 2M line, but it is much slower on my PDA than it was. Perhaps there are server issues with the new look. almost imposssible now on my Hx4700 - I've given up Bend two bits of coathanger about 15cm long into two U shapes, thie distance between the ends should be about the same as the two holes on each side of the head unit. Push a U into either side and push the U's apart - this should retract the two springs holding the head unit in - slide the unit forward and out. Can sometimes use the U's to pull it out but if stiff it will slip (proper tool have notches filed in them) get a finger in the cassette slot or similar Edited May 24, 2006 by NikpV Quote
