Hey Peeps

Tried the reprogramming on Dads S reg Galaxy

firstly

Two keys for vehicle one for doors no remote (1) different key for ignition with remote (2).

Put the key (1) for the door into the door for programming mode and got the light on the door to come on. then took door key out and held ignition key (2) with remote towards the mirror and hit the lock button pressing unlock three times.

Now the door light stayed for 15 seconds then went off on but the key fob flashes five times but does still not operate the remote unlocking.

:D Im miffed and I now have cold feet must wear shoooess.

I got two keys one with the unlock / lock button one without.

The one without opens the drivers door but not anything else. the remote key starts the car.

Ok different drivers door lock - one non remote key

All other lock (passenger/tail/ignition) - one remote key

right

You are trying to make the remote operate central locking. Ok (must have been the wine last night :D )

So you are putting the car into remote programming mode with one key and then trying to program the other. It appears that the car goes into programming mode but after pressing and holding lock etc the door led does not confirm that key has been accepted. Now when the GEM is programmed to accept the key information only passes from the key to the car (not the other way around) so if the Key itself flashes 5 times its nothing to do with the car.(in fact sitting here with the car a mile away- my remote flashes 5 times given the lock unlock sequence). In fact from your description nothing suggests that the car 'sees' the remote at all - the door led remains lit for 15 sec to program remote keys and does not respond with the 5 flashes ok signal. Conclusion - either remote is u/s (quite common) or battery in the remote key is getting low ( operates led but not enough for wireless) Dealer can test the remote for you.

Of the two keys you have is one the red coloured master key and then you have the one normal key which has the lock / unlock buttons on it ?

not the op - I assumed that S-reg would be 98 onwards - and thought they moved to the 2 key system from the red key system after 97 - may have got my dates wrong

He doesnt have a red keyand its a new battery so i think the key fob is creamed crackered.

Are the keys coded at all?

probably

Are the keys coded at all?

yes to the PATS - the key that starts the car, impossibly to tell if its coded to the GEM - for remote opening if the transmitter is borked.

Has the ecu been changed at all. Quite often if you get the dreaded footwell leak they change the ecu due to water damage.

There are two types of ecu, one that controls remote locking (more expensive) and one that doesnt (cheaper). When this happened to mine (before I owned it), the garage fitted the cheaper ecu hence my remote locking doesn't work but central locking does....

Could be that....

From 97 on the red key system was replaced by a 2 key pats programming system

and guess what ... its de-programmed my remote from the car :16: now where are the insructions again :16:

Nik read your handbook it says, dont press the remote while out of range of your car, you will loose the remote facility,,,,,,you need to press the unlock button 3 times quickly (within range of your car), and it should fix itself, if not you need to reprogram the remote key/s

rtfm - umm

I did it whilst checking for the OP :16:

anyway 1 minute with both of the remotes soon reprogrammed them :16:

DO NOT HOLD THE LOCK BUTTON AND PRESS THE LOCK BUTTON OUT OF RANGE OF THE CAR

Passive Anti Theft System, posh wording for imobiliser :23: a chip in the key is powered up by DC current passed through the air! this in turn emits a coded signal to the sensor ring located around the ignition switch, this signal is then decoded and depending on it being correctly recognised? the car will be allowed to start/run

now, the complicated bit, codeing the keys to the pats system! you either need the red master key or two existing coded keys to program in more keys depending on the year of the vehicle? or a good auto locksmith or a trip to the dealers and hooking up to their computer

PATS - Passive anti theft System This is a chip in a working key and a reader near the ignition switch unless the key can turn the ignition lock and the PATS recognises the chip in the key the car will not start. up to 8 (I think) keys can be remembered by the car. This has nothing to do with locking or unlocking the car or remote lock/unlocking the car. There is no battery in the key only a little chip which is activated by the reader and sends the code back to the reader. ALL keys which can start and run the car must have this chip in. If you have two keys which fit the ignition lock and both of which run the car (both chips are memorised) then you can program more keys to be recognised by the PATS (post 97-before 97 it needed a special red key). If you don't have two keys more keys can be proframmed by FORD using wds system.

The Remote key has both the PATS chip and a Wireless transmitter in powered by a battery. The key generates a code and transmits it (code changes every time it is memorised by the car (programmed) The car can remember 4 different remote keys but the csar has to be taught the code that is transmitter by each in the same programming session. You can program any number of remotes (up to 4) by putting GEM into learn mode (3 unlocks in drivers door) while in learn mode pressing the lock button and holding it while pressing the unlock button 3 times makes the transmitter key change to a new code and allows it to be memorised by the car. (all other remoites are then forgotten) All remote keys must be programmed at the same time.

Phew - Hope this help

I am assuming from your information that at some time your drivers door lock has been replaced and is not original on the car.

So you have a normal key which operates the drivers door, this will have a PATS chip in it but since it doesn't fit in the ignition lock it cannot be programmed to disable the PATS (immobiliser) it can only be used to open the drivers door.

You also have a remote key with both the PATS chip and a wireless transmitter. It is probably on of the original keys, it opens the passenger side door , tailgate and the ignition. The PATS chip is encoded so it disables the immobiliser and so it starts the engine. If the transmitter was working you could program the remote locking function but it doesn't appear to be.

Because you only have one PATS encoded key you will need to get a new key (to run the car) encoded by fords or some good auto locksmith (I assume) you may get it cut at lots of places but it will need encoding to start the car.

If you want further keys to unlock the drivers door you will just need to get it cut (No PATS)

Hope this helps

Any ideas of costings to have a new remote key coded up? and yes looks like the drivers door got changed dunno why they couldnt mathc the locks like you can do with the ford hex style keys.

tried a 4.7 rage in a light breeze and loved it :20: it was so stable and predictable :23: I quite fancy a 1.8 or a 2.5 for the windy days though, had the bullet out tonite on the local rec, had me all over the field :D much to the enjoyment of the local kids watching! it was a bit to much and I should have dropped back to one of the smaller kites but it was soooooo much fun scudding the width of the football pitch in one hit :23:
