This has been well covered by others - viz:
Smell of petrol, caused by breather tubes becoming separated from the carbon canister located under the offside front wing.

As requested, I have attached a picture of the offending article.
As you can see, one of the pipe fittings has popped out of the canister. The pipes are very stiff and springy, and the plasitc retaining clips holding the fitting in place were too weak to hold it in place.

What I did was find a fairly strong compression spring that fits neatly inside the pipe fitting and pushes the retaining clips outwards. I also gently warmed the pipe (with a heat gun) to give it a little more bend, so it's not straining to pop the fitting out again.

BTW, the canister can be removed completely by removing the gold coloured self tapping screw seen at the middle top, then lifting the unit out - the bottom has a lug that fits in a hole in the bracket.

I have problem with smell of petrol. I tried to locate that carbon canister, but I did not find it. Is this for MK I or MK II? I have 2.3 petrol MK I (-98). Could you upload more photos?

I have a MK 1 2.8 (98) I have seen it and you will find it inside the offside wing (drivers side), you have to remove the plastic inner wing cover by removing several screws around the cover edges once you have removed all screws that secure the cover you will be able to manouver the cover out from the wheel/wing area. Look inside top left and you will see it hanging there.
