Guest Cepheus Posted May 16, 2006 Report Posted May 16, 2006 Started getting an intermittant 1 second squeel when starting up. I'm presuming its the aux belt. Only other time I've had this was on a 1.6i ghia Orion which was easily fixed by moving the alternator to tighten the belt up. The belt looks in pretty good nick and I'm presuming it was replaced as per service intervals (Gal is has 1 previous company owner with FFSH). Is it just as easy to tighten the belt up? If so, what's the best line of attack? Quote
west Posted May 16, 2006 Report Posted May 16, 2006 1. turn ignition key to start engine.2. listen carefully when letting go of key3. If noise is when letting go of key, then its the starter motor4. if noise is after letting go of key, then its a belt.5. have friend start engine whilst you look into engine bay, noise should be obvious.6. if belt, check the steering pump belt (look under osf) this is on a mk 1 a standard v belt which may have stretched. twist with fingers (engine stopped)at should only turn 1/4 of a revolution and should be really tight.if loose, study the attached toothed washer arrangement and adjust tension to suit.but check for wear, if in doubt, replace (very simple)7.If starter motor, the open engine bay, disconnect battery, loosen bolts holding starter to engine case (13mm socket, bit fiddly)no need to undo wiring, but take it easy not to damage, once undone, grap hold of the pinion gear on the starter motorr and twist and pull at the same time, bendix should pull about 1" from the starter.apply a (little!) grease to bendix shaft8.replace starter motor. maybe its not one of the above, but on my 99 tdi, i had both and it used to squeel like a stuck pig in the morning. purs like a kitten know. Masked Marauder Posted May 16, 2006 Report Posted May 16, 2006 DON'T over tighten the PAS belt, it also drives the water pump and you will knacker the water pump. It should not be really tight, just tight enough not to slip. There should be 5mm movement up and down at the longest run of the belt, and if you have a torque wrench and a crows foot spanner then the correct setting on the tension setting nut for a used belt is 4Nm, which is not a lot. Or 7Nm for a new belt. Quote
NikpV Posted May 16, 2006 Report Posted May 16, 2006 twist with fingers (engine stopped) :( :D :D definitely  disconnect battery check for radio code first  Quote
bigdaddy Posted May 16, 2006 Report Posted May 16, 2006 The belt tensioner on the 2.3 model is self tensioning,,,,,,,,I have just changed the belt on my gal last weekend,,,,,,,,, get your gal on ramps, axle stands, or better a pit,,,,remove the undertray with a 14mm spanner, find the tensioner pulley apply the spanner to the nut and turn the tensioner clockwise, while applying the clockwise motion, remove the belt now postion the new belt on the pulleys and release the tensioner, and remove the spanner and refit the undertray this took me 30mins with the gal over a pit at work  Quote
Justice Posted May 16, 2006 Report Posted May 16, 2006 Or it could be that your battery is draining a bit and the alt has to work harder to put the charge back in,that is why you hear more alternator squeel over the winter months because people use the light more so draining the battery. Quote

I got the belt and will try this first, the tensioner is not cheap!! Quote
tightlines Posted May 16, 2006 Report Posted May 16, 2006 I had a squeaky squeal coming from the engine bay, which drove me mad, It had a mind of its own, sometimes it never happen then next time I started up it would go on all day. All the way to Paris in fact!! I couldn't pin point the noise it seemed to be everywhere around the engine bay. Well as you've said the tensioner is pricey, so I change the belt (cheapest option) and now silence. You must go for a genuine belt though, I could only get a pattern belt to begin with, that last about 40 miles before it started to sing. Quote
