Guest john Posted September 16, 2003 Report Posted September 16, 2003 N plated (95?) TDi with 187k on the clock. Had it from new. Original clutch and exhaust, only major probs have been gear box linkages and air con regassing. And lots of tyres! But the fuel consumption is dropping 28-33 mpg, acceleration is down (but then there never was much) and it struggles to go much above 75/80. Tried disconecting the MAF, but much worse & would hardly pull at all. Where do I go now? Don't like trial and error replacement and don't want to pay Quote
Guest SA Intruder Posted September 17, 2003 Report Posted September 17, 2003 Easy way of checking MAF is to disconnect it and drive. Any real difference means it is shot. However, since yours has earned its Starship Mileage badge, I suspect you need to remove and clean the entire inlet manifold and the EGR system. They gradually get blocked over time. The fact that this has taken this long on yours is probably down to the fact that regular oil & filter changes have been done, and that you do reasonbable journeys frequently? Also, I suspect you don't "baby" the engine, which can cause early coke-up. Good stuff Quote
Guest EVSS Posted September 17, 2003 Report Posted September 17, 2003 hi before i had my proper replacement from ford i tried a secondhand one from a 2 litre v/w sharan i had kicking about . wife used it in our tdi for 2 days and said it was like driving a different vehicle, more accelaration and quicker in general, i being the miser was worried about fuel consumption and bought the deisel one (187+vat trade ouch)gary Quote
Sher Posted September 18, 2003 Report Posted September 18, 2003 This is a question to SA Intruder. What you are saying is if we can cut down on EGR then we will get longer intervals before needing to spend lots of cash on cleaning the Inlet manifold+EGR valve. From what I know about the effects of EGR possibly more power, better fuel consumption and overall Lower running costs. I presume it can be done without compromising the emmisions test for diesels at MOT?? I know it cannot be done in the same way but I think this this is what was done to the Endura 1.8TDi in Mondeo, Escort etc to improve Power and Torque. I presume it needs access to the VAG.com equipment? Quote
Guest SA Intruder Posted September 18, 2003 Report Posted September 18, 2003 Sher, you are spot-on. The "standard" mod to all VW TDis (particularly in North America) is to use VAG-COM to virtually shut off the EGR. The detail is well documented. The reason for doing this is two fold: 1) it almost completely stops the intake system gumming up (which happens especially when EITHER on light load OR on idle) 2) it does improve the general running slightly all round. In terms of MOT emissions, the EGR only reduces NOX, not CO. So should be no problem. More info: http://www.tdiclub.com/TDIFAQ/TDiFAQ-7.html#j Quote
Sher Posted September 19, 2003 Report Posted September 19, 2003 I knew about the NOx reason for EGR. Question is how do we get this done?? Quote
Guest SA Intruder Posted September 19, 2003 Report Posted September 19, 2003 Er...find someone with VAG-COM? There are a couple of members with it, or get a local shop to do it. Should be one or two around Failsworth? I'll keep eyes open ... Quote
Sher Posted September 19, 2003 Report Posted September 19, 2003 Failsworth??? Thats very close to home!! :D How do you Know?? Quote
