Intelligent Wipers!

I have a 2003 2.3 16v (DOHC) Galaxy Ghia.

 

I know that when the wipers are on intermittent and you come to a stop, the intermitency drops down a level to give a longer pause between the cycles of wipe and pause.

 

I noticed today that during very heavy rain, with the wipers set at stage 1 constant (normal constant speed - not flat out) I came to a stop at some traffic lights and the wipers decided to drop down to intermittent. Is this normal as I thought this only happened when the wipers were on intermittent to begin with?

The wiper system is designed to drop back a setting with the exception of intermittent where the dureation gets extended.

 

eg the fastest speed resorts to single speed and the single speed resorts to intermittent.

 

The only time this is not true is if the wipers are intitiated whilst the vehicle is stationary then the set speed is mainatained until a drive cycle is underway after which the "normal" tranisitional wiper speed takes over.

The variable wiper control was launched during the MKII intial launch and should be standard on all of the facelifted MKII vehicles.

Have to say that I have experienced this wiper behaviour on my Alhambra. I wondered if it was the start of a wiper problem but there seemed to be some sense to what was happening!!!

 

Teddy Holiday's explanation matches what happens with mine.

My J reg BMW 320 had this as standard, so Fraud typically well behind the times!!!
