Hi gang,

Just found this forum, looks like it could be very helpful :D

 

Anyhoo, My '96 V6 keeps cutting out with no spark when it reaches operating temp, leave it 20 mins or so and it then restarts and runs well for another 10 mins or so.

 

I have had the RAC out (very good response times even if they can't fix)

The local dealer can't look for 4 days or so.

 

A suggestion was made that it may be the ECU Relay at fault, Can anyone tell me which one this is ? (No 18 is my guess)

 

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

What could be the worse case scenario ?

 

Replacing the ECU ? any suggestions as to the cost of this ? i'm just trying to be prepared for the shock :o

 

After all, they say bad things come in threes..

1 The car breaking down

2 Because of no car, 13yr old son mugged on way home from school whilst waiting on bus stop !!!

3 .......Bill from Ford ????

Just an Update...

 

Car has been with the dealer since last Monday (15th)

It was booked for Diagnostic on Thursday at 11:30, But wasn't started (the paragraph of fault description and 3 contact phone numbers where "lost" between service reception and the workshop)

 

When I spoke to the workshop controller at 3pm on Thursday and told him the fault, he said "Sounds like cyl head temp sensor, we'll get on with it straight away"

 

Rang again at 5:50pm to be told by another workshop controller that the car hadn't even got into the workshop! After a polite but forced complaint, i managed to get a promise that it would be done on Friday.

 

9am Friday, the workshop controller called me to say they had found a fault with the fuse box that was stopping the fule pump from working, when I re stated that the fault was no spark and that fuel was always present I was met with silence.

 

I rang again at 1pm to be told that they were still working on it.

 

at 4:30 PM, the workshop controller called to say that they had ordered a cyl head temp sensor and something for the fusebox but they could not work on the car on Sat am as not enough staff available, but it "should" be fixed Monday.

 

 

 

:blink: AAAAArrrggggghhhhhh!

James Hi,

You're not kidding....I shall name and shame in the appropriate area here once all is well again.

 

I shall not let sleeping dogs lie, this is the first and last time I shall use this dealer (it's only 10 mins walk from home).

 

I am going to write to both the dealer principle and Ford in Essex once I have the car back.

 

I dread to think what they are going to charge, especially as they appear to be finding faults that don't exist and are guessing at what the problem is !!!

I'm in Bristol, the two dealers here in Bristol are both part of the same group (currently Ford Retail after the original group went bust, not surprising really...)

 

Although there is another dealer outside of Bristol that has been recommended.

Sorry to hear this tale of woe; contact the Ford customer relationship centre and tell them that your vehicle is off the road due to faults which the dealer seems to be guessing at. Tell them that they have changed bits that have not cured the problem but they expect you to pay for them. Tell them that you have lost confidence in the dealer and ask what they will do to get your car working again.

This is getting beyond a joke - why do Ford appoint dealers who are unable to diagnose faults or get vehicles working again within a reasonable timescale?

Complete bolony - the coolant sensor bit...it won't stop the engine firing.

 

Have they checked the crank sensor and the ECU relay?

 

Relay 109 problem common for no-start at any temp

 

Crank sensor - common problem for hot start and dying at high temp.

 

Sounds like Clownsville down there....

A little update...

 

Still no car, the PCM has been fitted but they can't test as the immobiliser has cut in, I only have one key, so they say they will cut additional keys to reprogram everything.

 

The keys were sent to the other bristol branch of the dealership (they don't cut keys where my car is) but the guy who cuts the keys was on leave (this was Weds) but my keys will be cut today, Perhaps my Gal will be working today ?

Nope, keys are out of stock.

 

It's just as well i'm a naturally happy person :blink:

 

Anyway, I've now got trading standards involved and I currently await (not with baited breath) a call back from, hopeully, the dealer principle.

 

My case will be that the dealer shall:

"Have performed a service with care and skill within a reasonable period and at a reasonable price"

 

To date, they have fixed nothing, its been with them since the 15th and the bill is over

Update...

 

New PCM fitted, keys cut and everything programmed. Good.

Fault still there. Bad

 

On diags, new PCM shows a fault in the system that the original PCM didn't indicate. They are now going to fix the fault indicated by the new PCM and test again, if all is well then they will refit the original PCM and retest, if this works I don;t get charged for a new PCM, if it doesn't work then I get a new PCM (but get charged).....sort of progress?

 

Oh and I have a courtesy car now.

The dog is fine, a bit lame but almost her old self :( thanks

 

They gave me a Ka, which I don't mind, It's also got only 17 Miles on it (it'll sound like 17,000 when they get it back :blink:

 

To be honest, its beyond a joke, but I am getting somewhere with the service manager, he has welcomed my complaint and involvement of trading standards and wants me to continue to write my letter of dissatisfaction (I think he wants some ammo to get things changed- remember this dealership is owned by Ford Retail)

 

typically, the 2 year warranty i purchased with the Gal (warranty holdings) had run out some 3 weeks prior to the fault occuring- but they wouldn't have covered this as they would only pay upto

At last, Due to collect the ol girl tomorrow (Thurs)

 

The dealer had booked 20 hours :D but i "negotiated" down to six :lol:

She's Back :D and growling like she should.

 

As an added bonus, my remote locking and total closure now works from my original key, it didn't before it went in :lol:

 

Kind of expensive for 2 keys and remote locking to be fixed though eh :P

 

The Ka was somewhat rattlier and smelt VERY hot when it went back :D

Not an affliction that is uncommon to many car manufacturers.

 

The sensors used by the engine management systems across all brands are generally the same make.

 

Bosch have the European monopoly, followed by Delco and Valeo.

 

The Japanese tend to use Nippon, Hitachi and Mitsubishi sensors and controls.

 

Crank and Cam sensor problems are quite common. On Bosch fitments, the MAF sensor is the Achilles heel by a fair chunk.
