Guest Matt007 Posted May 13, 2006 Report Posted May 13, 2006 Hey, i dont know if this has be said befor, but i know some people where saying that they are having aircon problems. I recently took my galaxy to have some belts changed, and the man at the garage said that the aircon belt had been disconnected. So i phoned ford, who said that people do it in order to get an extra 7-8 miles to the gallon aprox. Dont know if that would help anyone, and i guess it only really applies to secondhand ones. buford_t_justice Posted May 13, 2006 Report Posted May 13, 2006 eh.......disconnect the belt?? why don't they just run it in ECON mode and therefore no compressor?? some people are so tight !!! Quote
Guest Matt007 Posted May 13, 2006 Report Posted May 13, 2006 I have no idea, but when i spoke to ford, they said its a really common thing. Iv only owned the car for a few weeks, but trust me, that aircons gonna get connected for the summer comming! LOL. Who cares about an extra few miles to the gallon! Matt Quote
mumof4 Posted May 13, 2006 Report Posted May 13, 2006 Hmmm......with the price of fuel going up....id care if i had it!! .....dont think i have it anyway....not sure...hmm.....i feel a looksie at the car coming on!!!  Quote
Guest Matt007 Posted May 13, 2006 Report Posted May 13, 2006 Id rather travel that little bit less with the aircon working in the heat , rather than driving that little bit further dying becasue its too warm! LOL Quote

Matt Matt, you might want to check the compressor sooner rather than later. if there's no telling how long it's been out of service for it may have seized and that's going to cost big bucks to replace. hope you have a warranty if this is the case. Guest Matt007 Posted May 13, 2006 Report Posted May 13, 2006 Im taking it to the garage on Tuesday to have it all looked at...heres hoping the plastic can stay in the wallet. LOL Matt Quote
strouf Posted May 13, 2006 Report Posted May 13, 2006 I wouldn't want to be the "bearer of bad news" but it sounds like someone got sick of repairing an ever breaking down CC.... Quote
Guest Matt007 Posted May 13, 2006 Report Posted May 13, 2006 i dont know to be sure....in northern ireland there isnt a real need for aircon most times. LOL. And knowing how tight most people are over here, i would imagine that its been done for the reason ford said - to get 7-8 miles to the gallon more. Matt Quote
bigdaddy Posted May 13, 2006 Report Posted May 13, 2006 Is the aux belt not a one piece affair,,,,,,where the belt goes round all the pulleys,,,,,,,, Quote
teresa Posted May 13, 2006 Report Posted May 13, 2006  why have aircon when uve got 6 windows  Quote
MrT Posted May 14, 2006 Report Posted May 14, 2006 :( why have aircon when uve got 6 windows  Yeah take off a car door and take it in the house. If it gets too hot you can wind down the window. :( Quote
Dave-G Posted May 14, 2006 Report Posted May 14, 2006 You can check if the compressor is seized by two methods: Visually: By looking to see if it's shaft is rotating while the engine is running - and aircon at the coolest setting. Ideally get someone to switch it on while you check if the clutch starts to rotate - and stops when they select a warm setting (it's inside the pully that is attached to the AC compressor) Manually: With the engine off reach down (roll ya sleeves up now :( ) try to rotate the components you can see inside the AC compressor drive pully. It should rotate quite freely. If it dont... you got a seized compressor  Quote
Masked Marauder Posted May 14, 2006 Report Posted May 14, 2006 The OP has a 2 litre petrol engine, I doubt very much that the aircon is using about 25% of the engine's power output. To be honest I hardly notice much Increase in fuel consumption in the summer. Perhaps because the heating is not using as much diesel. Quote
Ogben Schmutzel Posted May 15, 2006 Report Posted May 15, 2006 I wouldn't want to be the "bearer of bad news" but it sounds like someone got sick of repairing an ever breaking down CC.... Agreed - I'm affraid. Ithink that the fact that it is common is not that folk are after the extra miles, its cos the aircon don't work and is too expensive to fix!!! I might be there myself - will know soon  Regards.Oggy. Quote
Davetheref Posted May 16, 2006 Report Posted May 16, 2006 Why not take out all of the windows as well. That would cut down wind resistance=more mpg and the added bonus of not needing air con at all.  :( Quote
sanjsanj Posted May 18, 2006 Report Posted May 18, 2006 In the classic brainiac style: heres one for you.I've been thinking about this: Why dont you just run the A/C on the LO setting. then, when the temp inside of the car is BELOW the temp you want it to be, press Recirculate mode and then press EC or ECON.That way, your keepint the cool air inside and the hot air outside.....you would only need to switch it back to A/C when the temp's gone up a bit. What do y'all think? money saving? Quote

Thanks goodness for that! Just could do with a bit of gas top up i think... Matt First of all can i just say this is an absolutely fantastic forum. I'm a newbie and have managed to spend the last four nights reading up about the problems encountered with loss of power due to the MAF sensor. Heading away for two weeks hols with the fam' but am planning to get it sorted as soon as I get back - hopefully its just the MAF !!!!!!! Staying on this reply topic, can you tell me where this A/C/ belt is located AND the A/C compressor (link to pics would be ideal if possible). Once again, a CLASSIC forum Thanks in anticipation S.
