Guest aahridey Posted May 9, 2006 Report Posted May 9, 2006 I have another problem..........When I start my Galaxy (a '96 2.0 petrol) the starter lets out a short scream just as the starter motor disengages. It sounds a bit like a dry bearing. I have heard another Galaxy do this so I know I'm not alone!Anyone know what it is, and more importantly how do I cure it?The noise has been there since I bought the car 3 years ago, but I'm going to sell it soon and it's not good from a buyers point of view.......Thanks! NikpV Posted May 9, 2006 Report Posted May 9, 2006 Probably the Bendix bearing need greasing although I think you have to take the starter out to do it, one recent poster had it doing this for a year before failing. Quote
familyman Posted May 9, 2006 Report Posted May 9, 2006  Mine did exactly the same -managed to get a new starter motor off e-bay at a good price , on changing over duff starter i noticed a lot of wear on the main shaft and the starter gear ,it might be cured by lubing the bearings in the motor ,but considering the hassle of changing the starter it might be worth changing it for a recon one or a breakers yard special -like you say the screeching noise isn't exactly a good selling point! also make sure you get the right starter as there seems to be a few different types :D Quote
Justice Posted May 9, 2006 Report Posted May 9, 2006 It is quite a simple job to take it off and put some copper ease or grease on the bendix mechanism about 45 mins and if you are selling it you don't want to spend more than you have to. I don't how apt you are with a box of tools but the main thing to remember is to disconnect the battery. to do the job you will need to Disconnect the batteryTake off the under trayMake sure you have a long 3/8th extension barDon't use loads of grease as it will spin out and contaminate the clutch plate, use just enough to grease the mechanism. NikpV Posted May 9, 2006 Report Posted May 9, 2006 Make sure you have the radio code before disconnecting the battery  Quote
Justice Posted May 9, 2006 Report Posted May 9, 2006 Whoops ! forgot about that  mines a flip front so I don't have a code. Quote
Buncers Posted May 10, 2006 Report Posted May 10, 2006 Mine did the same for about a year - see http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/index.ph...wtopic=4300&hl= Quote
