Hi Guys, sorry for all the posts today but I thought it worthwhile putting my experience to good use.

Background.

1998 Galaxy Ghia-X 2.3 with leather imported from Belgium, extended warranty bought from Fraud UK, full re-spray under warranty at 5 months old due to stone chip damage all over the bodywpork!!!!! . Paint adhesion problem

All servicing done by me since warranty expired.

Oil changed at 5K intervals, with new filter, from new. Using genuine Ford 5W30 oil untill I obtained 25L drums of Vauxhall Super Synthetic 0W30 at a bargain price :D

Faults / Mods not in an accurate order.

Fitted my own Towsure towbar as I didn't want to cut the bumper

Clonking from front suspension reported at first service, something tightened but not fixed properly untill I did it myself at 80K!

1x trackrod end in warranty

Fitted Boge Nivomat self leveling suspension at 30K, fantastic!

Discs, x4, changed at 80K

Top strut bearings changed and new upper spring seats fitted

New genuine exhaust fitted at 120K, still original cat

Cruise control plays up, perished pipe

New cooling fans, 100K and 120K, tried to repair 1 but not worth trouble as it failed a year later

1 ignition coil failed, simple substitution and spark check identified faulty one

Drivers door loom broke at the back of the plug, soldered and repaired

Passenger door 1 wire broke as it entered the door, away from plug so easier

N/S rear door locking motor had water and rust, cleaned and re-lubed

Radiator leaking at plastic end caps, exchanged at specialist

Cruise control again, replaced control unit with one from ebay member in the states, only $60 plus post,

Hi Mumof4,

I welcome the information exchange

Unfortunately I will be on my usual family jaunt across Europe, probably hammering my Galaxy down an Autobhan at the time you are all meeting, maybe next time ;)

Indeed welcome John, to the rich tapestry of life that is created by being a Galaxy (or whatever derivative we drive  !!!) I am sure we will have ggod use for your mechanical skills, especially MUMOF4 who appears to have had a bit of a rough time recently with her old Gal'

wonder how many of these there are on the forum? But triplets   ;)

TRIPLETS!!!!!OMG..your wife needs a medal!!

I am sure my wife would apprecaite your kind sentiments, but at least she got the birth(s) all over and done with in one hit, and she had loads of drugs!!

Me I had to watch all the incisions, blood gore etc.......... I'll get me coat and passport ready

At least the Galaxy is very welcoming for those of us with large® families - its our second. Our first was a petrol 2.3 which we got a couple of months after the kids were born (5 years ago), now on the 1.9tdi 130 - very pleaesed, generally - once we get the parking sensors, dmf recall sorted later this month. A greeeeat engine....

Cheers

Chris

Where do you get the LED bulbs from, and how much do they cost?

Halfords, can't remember exact cost but the 21W style ones were around

The LEDs sound like a great idea, but beware......

...putting my Plod head on; all bulbs are only legal if they are 'E' marked, so after maket bulbs that are not 'as per manufacturers recommendation' frequently do not have the 'E' mark and are then 'technically' illegal. However, how many policemen do you know that go round taking bulbs out to check!!!

The bigger problem would only arise if you were involved in an accident/rear end shunt and the insurance assessor came along and checked the bulbs - they potentially could refuse payout if the bulbs were not 'approved'. :D

The same sort of argument applies to those who tint their rear light cluster to match the bodywork. Original kit was 'E' approved, but onece tinted is no longer. If rear shunted insurance companies are unlikely to pay out IF someone notices.

Sad thing is that the LEDs are probably better!!!!

The main question is, of course, whether the LED bulbs are 'E' approved - I'll try and find out.

As regards insurance companies, they use far too much of what we pay in premiums paying salaries to people whose job it is to find any excuse they can to avoid doing what we pay them for - brilliant!
