This year ours has started to zap me :D ;) when I grab the edge of the door when getting out, haven't noticed it before, the only way you are going to get a shock is if you have developed a potential difference(voltage) between you and the metal shell of the car usually by friction - I've tried touching the metal interior before I get out but it still happens so the conclusion I've come to is that the clothes I am wearing charge up by friction as I slide across the seat, what does work is, opening the door grabbing the top of it then sliding out - remembering to do this is the problem. I'm still investigating the problem :D :D

An alternative explanation is that the car has developed a voltage wrt the road and I am the 'wire' its discharging through but this should only happen if you are wearing conductive shoes and you are the first person out. :D :D

Air friction causes a static build-up on the car's body shell, you get out, touch the car and it grounds through you.

Generally the hotter the weather the worse the phenomenon.

And you really don't want to have to grab a helicopter winch wire for the same reason, but worse, think of all the static off the rotors!

A cure? a static grounding rubber dangly thing that has a wire down the inside.....

The static shocks you feel usually occur because of the charge generated as you slide around on the seat. As someone else suggested holding onto the metal BEFORE you exit the door makes the discharge occur through your shoes and you don't feel anything.

I have to remember the above when I'm wearing a certain pair of trousers, none of my other clothes seem to cause the effect.

all things suggested can cause static.

the weather does have an effect on how well the car holds its charge.

its not summat i would do anything about, just let it shock you lol, its not exactly life threatening.

the worst places for static is Woolworth's and tesco CD stands!
