I don't think it should have red master key - according to TIS

From 98 MY onwards the master key has been deleted and has been replaced with another black key. Two keys are required to programme additional keys by the owner/operator. Up to a maximum of eight keys may be programmed to the system.

I'm assuming you are using this method...

1) make sure all windows, doors and sunroof are closed

2) insert the new key in the drivers door and turn to the unlock position 3 times (hold the key in this position for about half a second each time)

3) the led on the drivers door should now light up to confirm 'set up mode'

......

what happens to the door Led - does it come on ?

4) within 5 seconds, remove the key and point at the rear view mirror. press the 'lock' button and hold it down, and now press the unlock button 3 times.

5) now release the lock button. the led on the door should now flash

Is there another sensor for the remote locking at the back of the car, if you point at this click unlock 3 times during the programming period - does the door led flash?

not sure nik i wouldnt know what to look for couldnt even see a sensor in the front it just said point it at the rearview mirror.....

seeing that you are online:

do you know what service 1n01 means on the air con consul?

hopefull ythis is just telling me there is no gas in the aircon as the previous owner emptied it at the end of last summer.....as he didnt use it during winter apparently it builds up some sort of bacteria in it otherwise.....

I have a mkII but I seen to recall from other posts that the sensors were little domes but may be completely off track here, from the age of the vehicle I am assuming that its an infra red remote - if its not there is a slightly different procedure I think.

Sorry no Idea about the service number - I'm at work and no references here

according to the owners manual there are sensors either above the rear doors or just behind above the rear windows i will check later...

i get the distict feeling that i have just bought a car with some major technical issues i cant beleive so many things go wrong with these cars......

Forget the sensors, they are for the infra-red remote that was phased out before 1998. 1998 models should have a radio remote. These do die. Have the fob checked at a dealers.

Thanks MM I couldn't work out when they changed from infra-red to wireless

See this link for Seatkids - Ford procedure

Probably worth trying first - dealer can test the strength of the wireless output

 ;)
