mikej Posted May 1, 2006 Report Posted May 1, 2006 Can anyone recommend a brand of towbar that does not include cutting the rear bumper ideally i would like one that can accomidate a hollywood vertical 4 bike carrier and caravan . Can anyone advise on where to purchase a bar and possibly how easy/difficult is it to fit yourself that is if any of you have done it etc?thanksmike....... Quote
AndeeeH Posted May 1, 2006 Report Posted May 1, 2006 The towbar on my last Galaxy was fitted in place of the bumper bar and didn't require the bumper cover to be cut. IIFC it was a case of removing the bumper cover, unbolting the bumper bar and then bolting the towbar in its place before replacing the cover. The parking sensors were unaffected and the wiring went up into the right rear corner where the connections were made below the right rear light assembly. I'm afraid I dont know what make it was. Hope this helps. Andy. Quote
johnb80 Posted May 2, 2006 Report Posted May 2, 2006 My Towsure bar fits as described above, easy job, no cutting or drilling. Regards - JB Quote
tim-spam Posted May 2, 2006 Report Posted May 2, 2006 As does the Brink - available from Halfords and with a genuine VAG harness to connect into the rear light electrics. Quote

Guest Snooper601 Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 Towsure definitly fit without cutting any holes in the bumper on the MK1 version. Cheers Quote
sepulchrave Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 Yes, but the Hollywood towbar bike rack needs bolt-on towball fitment to enable sandwich plate to be fitted, not swan-neck type towball! mikej do you already have the Hollywood rack? because the other type you can use is the Pendle; this will fit on swan-neck, however you cannot tow a caravan as well. May I humbly suggest that you get the ordinary Hollywood 4-bike rack and then just fit it to the caravan! ;) In order to provide the correct answer first one must READ THE QUESTION  Quote
Guest Snooper601 Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 The Towsure is the standard 2 bolt ball fixing type, I have a Witter bike rack bolted on mine, after the cheap one I used to have dropped off on the M25 at 4 in the morning  Quote
mikej Posted May 8, 2006 Author Report Posted May 8, 2006 Hi all and thanks for the many replies , basically what i,m looking for is a towbar that meets the following criteria :-1, reasonable price and will take the hollywood 4 bike rack this is the verticle type that i believe has a base plate in between the ball and bar and will allow a van to be towed at the same time.2, don't care if its removable or not .3, don't care if its swan neck or standard providing it can do the above, swan neck ? I dont have a van or the verticle rack yet but do have a standard hollywood 4 bike rack that fits to the tail gate , this is held in place by a series of straps etc.You mention putting this type of rack on the van instead , i have never thought about this to be honest,is this possible?.Also in the past i have only had witter bars is there any real difference in quality or more importantly the safety aspect between these and less expensive bars like towsure etc as the towbar price varies so much for a galaxy , last but not least are they an easy diy install for one person , fitter by trade but carrying an injury so just wandering if i should try it ?thanks in advance... Quote
Guest Snooper601 Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 Swan neck refers to the type that has no bolts holding on a separate ball, it has a bent bar with the ball on the end of it. Towsure fits all your criteria, I have the same critera and bought mine 71/2 years ago. Cheers Quote
sepulchrave Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 mikej, sounds good, snoopers got it...go with the towsure. Quote
