buford_t_justice Posted April 30, 2006 Report Posted April 30, 2006 What are the options for diverting sound from the Ford Multimedia DVD System through the door speakers instead of through the headphones?? Which would you recommend? Thanks. Quote
Davetheref Posted May 1, 2006 Report Posted May 1, 2006 I have a portable FM modulator that plugs into the headphone out socket on the DVD player and you just tune your radio into the freqency of the mod. It is a very small piece of kit that can run on batteries or the ciggy lighter. You can pick them up quite cheaply from Ebay and the like. Quote
Masked Marauder Posted May 1, 2006 Report Posted May 1, 2006 An excellent piece of kit Dave, I have one, but bear in mind the use of them is not legal in the UK. Quote
Davetheref Posted May 1, 2006 Report Posted May 1, 2006 Didn't know that MM. Do you know why as they are very easy to buy ?I bought mine on holiday in the USA from Radio Shack. Quote
Gteuk Posted May 1, 2006 Report Posted May 1, 2006 God, I bought mine off ebay before christmas, nice piece of kit but it does not remember what MP3 track it was on before turning engine off :o Other than that a supurb piece of cheap technology Quote
buford_t_justice Posted May 1, 2006 Author Report Posted May 1, 2006 thanks for the info. all I need to do now is source a few more parts and then fit everything !! :) Quote
Gadgetoid Posted May 2, 2006 Report Posted May 2, 2006 There are 4 alternative arrangements to have DVD sound coming out of car speakers which I can think of : 1. Adapter from earphone socket wired to one of those 'false cassette' gadgets - cheap, simple, and legal, doesn't use a power socket, but messy 2. FM adapter - as already pointed out not UK legal, also uses a power socket, but may have the benefit of a USB or solid state memory (eg SD card) input socket as a bonus 3. Take audio output from the back of the visteon DVD player - there are two groups of 3 aux sockets at the back of it ( one 'in' , one 'out' ), as well as the similar aux sockets built into the panel of the multimedia console. You could wire the 'out' sockets through the gearlever console to the back of the radio, but would then need an appropriate adapter to convert video/left audio/right audio sockets to whatever input socket exists on the back of your radio (certainly not present on the back of a Ford standard fit radio, but may be a better option if you have VW or aftermarket headunit ) 4. The power loom wire ( Part number F1146020 I think - haven't got the invoice with me at present, but see my picture uploaded into the 'Retro-fit DVD' thread) contains the standard audio/in out connector for the factory fit multimedia system - but this is a Visteon proprietary plug and I'm still not 100% sure about the pinouts for this - I'm not at all certain that they are the same as the existing 12 pin socket that normally links the Ford head unit to the rear CD changer. In particular I think the power pins are not identical. I've talked to BDM2510 who did retro fit the system to a Sharan and he blew a fuse in a (Ford) head unit when using this connector. I'm not counting on anyone with a factory fit system spending an afternoon with a multimeter to work it all out either! Quote
buford_t_justice Posted May 2, 2006 Author Report Posted May 2, 2006 what exactly is the third multiplug for on the back of the DVD drive? When I say third I mean the top one. Quote

FM adapter - as already pointed out not UK legal, also uses a power socket, but may have the benefit of a USB or solid state memory (eg SD card) input socket as a bonus Sounds good to me. Can even hook the iPOD up to it as well. Bonus !! And who cares if its illegal. I don't think Plod is going to bust us for using it. He'll probably ask to tune in while he stuffs his face with coffee and a twinkie!! 3. Could well be the neatest solution but until someone figures out how to do it................. aa Quote
Gadgetoid Posted May 2, 2006 Report Posted May 2, 2006 Third multiplug socket on the DVD drive is not used in the Galaxy setup. Not sure about the same system in a Mondeo, Volvo or Renault (Visteon supply the multimedia system for all these - and probably more) Quote
Gadgetoid Posted May 2, 2006 Report Posted May 2, 2006 The other advantage to not using the standard visteon connector to the headunit on a Galaxy is that you can keep the CD changer. I believe that true factory fit multimedia systems cannot have a CD changer fitted with out some expert jiggery-pokery :P Quote
