Could there be two types of temp sensor, one which is NO and one NC?

There are two similar switches, one for the aircon on a V6 that is NC > 4 deg C and the booster heater switch which is NC < 10 Deg C.

I can't help with the part number listed as the catalogue just says it is a temperature switch.

I think the one you want is 701 959 625 though and is about

Unclip the switch from the wiper linkage and move it to the side. I managed it and I have hands like shovels....

by unclip do you mean pull towards the front of the car? its not secured to the filter is it? (no unscrewing, no bolts right?)

from what ive read on here, there are 2 temp sensors on my 1.9tdi

one is located under the front bumper area

and one in line with the battery,on the wiper arm links

so it would seem they changed the right one, under the skuttle panel, which is the senor for the aux/booster heater

well im having my uprated glow plug fitted to my booster,as i type

the plug looks very different to the normal ones, has 2 wires comming out of the plug, which goes into

the main plug in the booster, you remove the old wires white/black,from the plug itself

and push home the new wires in to the plug, the size of the plug is a lot smaller

anyway will we see how it goes, when its all on

well i changed my heater glow plug yesterday and we are now taxi-ing on the a45 runway :( :D i heard it this morning and took it for a 2 mile spin and the temp gauge rose at a fair rate considering the temp was 6.5c, the job took me about 2.5hrs to do ,the glowplug i took out looked like it had hardly been used but that was probally down to the fact it was disconnected before by some fraud monkey :D ;) so i'm well chuffed now ;)

just to confirm that you didn't have any faults cleared - I presume that it would have been the glowplug open circuit dtc if it was disconnected

I suspect that BT Fleet changed the temp sensor when they were originally trying to fault the booster heater and ordered the wrong replacement due to the difficulty in identifying the correct part that I am having. I wondered if they changed anything else! In my case the problem was a faulty heater unit and they replaced this together with the metering pump but left the wrong temp sensor in (or out as I found yesterday).

So if anyone can confirm the correct part number (I suspect it is possibly 701 959 625) and verify this sensor if definitely NC below 10c that would be terrific.

If anyone can give me any hints of how to find the other temp sensor behind the bumper I would like to take a look at it to check it is the correct one and to ensure BT did not introduce and further problems.

Paul

Paul, the sensor you refer to is just to the side of the fog lamp. Facing the front of the car, it is about 8" inboard of the right hand fog lamp, and is visible through the grille. You can force it with a freezer spray.

John thanks for that, do you know the easiest way to get access to it?

Also what is your understanding of what this sensor does? Cleary on mine the booster heater ambient air temp sensor is on the wiper arm but I seem to recall the sensor behind the bumber was also referred to as aux heater in Vw documentation. Or did they move the location of it at some point?

I'll be glad when I get to the bottom of this and find the correct replacement :-)

Hi fellow funbus fettlers

Is it possible to disable the aux heater as its costing me a fortune in extra diesel? I'm not so keen on cutting any wires but unplugging things seems ok!!

does it actuallt cost anymore sinc it keeps the engine up to operating temperature (unless there is a fault of course and its running all the time)

OK. Just to clarify a point here. If you check in the TIS, you will see that there are several wiring diagrams for the booster heater, depending on the model and year/month of manufacture! Yours sounds like mine, which is a late 2002 model. On this model, if you check the CORRECT wiring diagram in the TIS, the booster heater is switched by a switch on connector N289 which is the one by the fog lamp! I don't think you'll find one on your wiper arm, I certainly couldnt!
