Guest KARMUN Posted April 27, 2006 Report Posted April 27, 2006 Hi,is there anyone who can help me on this subject? How do i replace the rear brake pads on my 1.9Tdi 1990 Ghia Galaxytried last night and used a cylinder compresser but this did not push the cylinder in (hand brake cable was disconnected). What is the a procedure for the removal of the pads from the caliper?Do i have to do anything to release the ABS?Hope to get these done today so any feedback would be great.THANKYOU FOR YOUR HELP  Quote
Masked Marauder Posted April 27, 2006 Report Posted April 27, 2006 The brakes self-adjust by the caliper piston screwing it's self out as the brakes are applied. You need to remove the pads and push the piston back using a brake wind-back tool. It is important you also note that you should not force brake fluid back through the ABS unit. So you will also need to clamp the flexible brake pipe between the wheel and the chassis and then open the caliper bleed nipple. Quote
Mauser Posted September 24, 2006 Report Posted September 24, 2006 Just heard the nice sound of metal on metal....quick wheel off and no rear pads , will follow your kind instructions to the letter and hopefully replace this week.Regards Simon Quote
Guest Nely Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 Just heard the nice sound of metal on metal....quick wheel off and no rear pads :), will follow your kind instructions to the letter and hopefully replace this week.Regards Simon In the absence of a wind-back tool, i managed to do this job using a g-clamp to push the cylinder in, and a large pipe wrench to rotate the cylinder. The cylinder must be wound back under the pressure applied by the clamp. Takes a long time and a few knuckles though....take care not to damage the cylinder surface...... Quote
Mauser Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 Used a sash clamp the type which lock as you tighten them :D, they work great as the head can swivel so as I tightened it it rotated and moved back. i just slackened the bleed screw and as i pushed it back it sent the fluid down a pipe to jar. All back on now needed to slacken handbrake which needs adjusting back up tomorrow.Got pads from Motormania for Quote
El Dingo Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 I saw the tool that does this job today at Halfords - Quote
galaxy_1.9TD_Zetec Posted December 21, 2006 Report Posted December 21, 2006 Just heard same metal grinding, so I bought a set of FRONT pads. But, front pads are fine. Took off rear wheels and found problem there - down to bare metal. New pads in the morning ! If I open the bleed nipple, then clamp / rotate the cylinder - clockwise or CCW as I look towards the cylinder ? Cheers (Great Forum) Quote
rushy Posted December 21, 2006 Report Posted December 21, 2006 clamp the flexi pipe first then undo the bleed nipple!! rotate the piston clockwise as you look at it. You guys were lucky, i had metal to metal rear brakes in the summer, as i took the caliper off, the piston fell out!!! had to get a new caliper!!!! Quote
galaxy_1.9TD_Zetec Posted December 22, 2006 Report Posted December 22, 2006 Got the pistons on the caliper pushed back with the help of a g-clamp and a pair of pipe pliers. My biggest problem was getting the correct pads from the local parts shop, as my Galaxy seems to have VW disks / calipers / most running gear. I think it was made as a Sharan and they took the badges off and stuff Fraud ones on. Car ticking away nicely now Quote

Car ticking away nicely now The sharran, gal and alhambra were all made by vw in the same factory mate. when i need bits for mine, i get a quote from local fraud dealer, then cross the road to VW!!
