Ok the time has come.

5 years of hassle have finally ground me down and I think the time has come to dump the Galaxy.

I figure I have around 7-8K to spend and want as new a car as possible.

I am thinking of a 03/04 2 litre HDi Picasso.

Anyone out there with serious views on whether they are any good or not.

Which model should I go for?

Experiences of such vehicles would be great.

Any other suggestions would be most welcome.

Cheers,

Greg.

No

Greg - even with the 5 years you have had it your Galaxy is 10 years old and was 5 when you got it - Invest your money in a more up to date Galaxy!!

That way if it goes wrong you know what to do - Whereas with a Picasso you have to learn French to fix it!!

I would have another Galaxy (I couldn't be that unlucky twice could I?)

But my next car will be a diesel.

7-8K on a diesel Galaxy is not going to get me much.

Either an old one, a high mileage one or a low spec one.

None of these really appeal to me.

Aye, but there is a reason you can get a 3 years old Diesel Picasso for that kind of money.

And budget for a spare wheel lock for the Picasso and check it has a spare wheel too.

heathen!!!!! :P ...the prices of galaxys are going to drop rock bottom when the new one hits the roads....plus there are some good ones on ebay at the mo...so you will prob be able to get a relatively new one for that kind of money. :)

Believe me, the picasso has more than its fair share of faults too, as do most cars..........

The grass isn't always greener on the other side !

I was only repeating what i was told about prices falling.....if im wrong im the first to admit it so maybe im wrong. :P

but prices will fall as places try to get rid of the old stock to make way for the new.. :)

Thanks for the replies as always.

I think the only reason they are so cheap is because the new price is so much lower.

A Picasso 16K at new and 8K at three years old isn't a million miles away from a 24K Galaxy being worth 12K three years later.

[M04]

I don't think the prices will come much lower and Ebay Galaxies for a 3-4 year old diesel without a million miles on are still up inthe 9, 10, 11K region.

I realise that the grass isn't always greener on the other side however if I bought another Galaxy and started to have the same faults I have already had then I'd feel a right prat for fallling into the same trap.

I have posted the same question on the Picasso site and reading through old posts they have exactly the same opinion of Galaxy's as we do of Picasso's

Some of them love em and some of em hate em.

I am wise enough to realise that things will probably go wrong with nearly any car but I just feel I need to change even if it's to prove I was wrong.

I have never owned such an unreliable car and it breaks me heart to think I'd go through it all again if I had another one.

The strange thing is if it had have been reliable it would have been the best car I'd ever had.

I have a 9 year old galaxy and believe me its had its share of faults and still does by all accounts but after viewing a load of other MPV's the galaxy is by far the best i've come across she may cost be a small fortune at certain times but then again she works hard for it :)

Its a good point greg, and I would agree if it wasn't for the times when it doesn't go wrong, as these times are excellent. I have never had such a car that you can drive for 7 solid hours and get out without feeling nackered. The kids love the space, and generally even with the faults I believe it to be the best overall people carrier currently on the market, and I have driven most of them at some time, so not speaking too biased.

Do what I've done, get a recent Galaxy even out of manufacturers warranty and pay about 200 quid a year on a third party warranty, that covers nearly everything that goes wrong. Providing your car hasn't got starship enterprise mileage and isn't older than 10 years you can get one reasonably. I have had loads of major expensive stuff go wrong over the last 3 years, but I haven't paid for any of it, other than wear and tear items.

Warranty is not something I have ever realy thought of but may well do in the future.

I agree it the most comfortable, versatile car I have ever had and will not look forward to the time I am without it.

The one thing I do notice about the Picasso site to ours is that the Picasso failures seem to stem form owners being disatisfied by cheap components that are poor fitting, flimsy but work.

Our site seems to be dogged by generally good quality build but expensive frequent repairs i.e aircon, aux heater etc.

Unless I am not reading the right posts there doesn't seem to be the same amount of Picasso owners all with the same fault as with the Galaxy.

Having suffered from a full aircon failure costing

I love my galaxy but i do find myself worrying about what's going to go wrong next with it

I think whatever car you get these days you will experience problems with.....

They are built as cheaply as possible using inferior quality materials/parts.

Why would they want to sell you a car that is not going to go wrong, after all they need to sell spare parts don't they :D

Couldn't agree more......

Working for a car company I have to defend them a little here.

When was the last time car prices went up... to my knowledge top of the range Galaxies were circa 25K when they came out in 95. They are still the same price now. I can't think of many things that haven't risen in price in 10 years. The only way the car companies can achieve this is to reduce the cost of the components they are fitting in them usually detrimental to the quality...

Very true.

Very true.

They can reduce the unit price because all the tooling up and R&D and training staff etc are done. The money for that has been recovered as it will have been factored into the costings on estimated sales.

In addition there then came competition from cars like the Grand Voyager.

So prices could be cut and were.

I had a Picasso (when they first cama out) before my 2 Gals in a row and I am much happier with the gal. I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but I was never 100% happy with the Picasso. No probs at all, but it just seemed a bit boring and the seats were never as comphy as the Gal.

Its not a bad car but just too boring, maybe, for my tastes.
