I doubt it is the rings. How many miles has the engine done? You will get a bit of crankcase pressure anyway.

Could be a faulty MAF. It is the round pipe straight after the air filter box in the induction. Unplug the sensor and see if it is the same, worse or better. If it is the same or better then the MAF has died.

Cheers for the reply MM.

The engine has done 140k but had the head done after cam belt failure at 70k according to past paperwork. Since i've bought it the engine has been 100% sweet, Not even puffing a bit of smoke at start up. The oil level is half way since service at 2/2/06 and water has never needed to be topped up since purchase. Funny you should suggest the MAF as i've just put a second hand one on to eliminate another fault. I will put my old one back on tomorrow and fingers crossed.... Will post back afterwards.

Again many thanks for the reply.

Well changed the maf over , and no difference. Smoke coming from the exhaust, vey rough idling. Booked into a garage for monday morning. Any other ideas or things i can try to diagnose the problem.

What colour is the smoke?

Black - Too much fuel/not enough air

White - Injection or valve timing is out

Blue - Burning oil

The timing pullies can slip on a TDi as there is no Woodruf key, simply a tapered pully seat. It is a known problem, I would suggest you don't use your car until it has been checked as valve and piston damage can occur if it has slipped.
