Intermittant Timing Chain Rattle

I have a Galaxy 2.0 petrol. R reg. 100k miles. Overall good condition.

Intermittantly there is a loud rattling noise from the timing chain area. The noise is either fully evident or not at all. For this reason I do not think it is the chain itself but may be the hydraulic tensioner. When evident the noise is worst on idle and when returning to idle after revving. The noise can be there with engine warm or cold.

When its there, the engine sounds horrible, when its not its still very sweet and quiet.

Also is the tensioner any easier to replace than the chain?

Thanks

It's possible that some of the plastic chain guides may have broken up. That would need more movement from the tensioner to keep the chain tensioned and hence the rattle. I havent suffered this on a 2 litre but I did have it on a 2.9 24v Cosworth Engine.

Don't replace just one of these, EVER!

New chain needs new tensioner / blades and vice-versa.
