Hi Everyone,

As a new member firstly let me just say what a great community site this is, and what a pleasure reading through so many good, interesting and informative posts by such helpful members. I hope one day that I may evolve into such a useful source of Galaxy enlightenment, but alas such is not my current forte in this life. Hence my first question:-

I have just acquired an R reg. GLX 1.9Diesel and the speedo seems to be possessed.

If I am to believe what it is telling me

FLG,

Had exactly the same on one of my previous Sharans; unfortunately can't tell you what caused it but I do know that it was cured when the dealer changed the instrument cluster (dials etc).... Hope you will manage to solve it another way than that!

there was a problem on early mkII models where this was a problem and the solution was a new cluster (actually it was 3 ) before they had the corrected one - don't know if it affected ealier models though  :D

Could be either a fault in the instrument panel, or the speed sensor on the gearbox - had my old Rover 820 play up in a similar fashion; that was about

my zafira was having the same problems, luckily under warrenty they diognosed a new instrument cluster, something to do with the p.c.b,but the dealer retained the old part and sent it to a place to be mended.so its possible that it is a servicable item if your brave enough :o

Maybe someone here can point you in the right direction or you can find it in the forum but if you have climate control, a certain combination of button presses can make it display the cars speed. If you can do this, you could see if the speed on the climate control display is erratic as well as the speedo. If both are erratic it is the sensor, if only the console is erratic the problem lies there.

If you don't have climate control and your model is VAG COM compatible, you could find someone with VAG COM who would be able to read the live speed as you were driving.

:D Sorry can't help, but it's not an uncommon problem. My 1996 galaxy did the same intermittently. Repairers couldn't make it do it, or find the problem, so no idea what the solution is. However, it would only start this trick on long journeys, so MAYBE it's a heat transfer thing ... a cable needing some shielding from the exhaust? (My speedo mirrored the rev counter movement.)
