As long you have got 2 keys you can program the chip on another (Mk II) or on a Mk I you need the red key to do this IIRC

right - the two keys you have will enable you to program the new key to be accepted by the immobiliser system. Can't remember procedure I will have a look later

The link is for reprogramming the remote key - follow the procedure - note after the new key is programmed all others will be erased so you have to repeat the procedure will all of your remotes (up to a max of 4) without exiting the gem system.

Note the two sections are separate - you can have a remote which opens the car but cannot run the engine and vice versa

Hope this helps

Programming new keys for PATS immobilizer

This procedure only works if two or more programmed ignition keys are available and it is desired to program additional key(s).

Note:

If the programming procedure is not successful, the new key(s) will not start the vehicle and the anti-theft indicator will flash. If the programming procedure was not successful leave the ignition switch in the RUN position for at least 30 seconds, repeat the Key Programming procedure from step 1. If the failure repeats, refer to Diagnostic and testing to review DTCs and carry out Pinpoint Tests.

Note:

A maximum of eight ignition keys can be programmed to a passive anti-theft system (PATS) equipped vehicle.

Note:

If the steps are not carried out as outlined, the programming procedure will end.

Note:

Ignition keys must have the correct mechanical key cut for the vehicle and must be a PATS encoded key.

1. Insert the first programmed key into the ignition lock cylinder and turn the lock cylinder from the OFF position to the RUN position (maintain ignition lock cylinder in the RUN position for one second).

2. Turn ignition lock cylinder to the OFF position and remove the first key from the ignition lock cylinder.

3. Within five seconds of turning the ignition lock cylinder to the OFF position, insert the second programmed ignition key into the ignition lock cylinder and turn the ignition lock from the OFF position to the RUN position (maintain the ignition lock cylinder in the RUN position for one second).

4. Turn the ignition lock cylinder to the OFF position and remove the second key from the ignition lock cylinder, key programming mode is now active.

5. Within ten seconds of turning the ignition lock cylinder to the OFF position, insert the unprogrammed ignition key (new key) into the ignition lock cylinder and turn the ignition lock cylinder from the OFF position to the RUN position (maintain the ignition lock cylinder in the RUN position for less than five seconds).

6. Check the new programmed key starts the vehicle. Turn the ignition key to the OFF position for five seconds and then try to start the vehicle with the new programmed key.

7. To program additional key(s), repeat the applicable key programming procedure from step 1.

I have 2 infra red remote keys that work perfectly, in the ignition and opening/closing, I have the original 'master' key that is not programmed. I've tried the above procedure with this 'master' key, but cannot get it to program. Does anyone know of another method for a non-remote master key, other than taking it to Ford and being charged the earth. :D

sorry I am confused - mk2 (from your sig) have radio not Ird remotes, they don't have 'master' keys either - unless its a completely new breed of car. If you have three radio remotes you have to program all three at one go

the procedure above in the thread is to program the key so it starts the car (pats system) not for remote operation - for that you need the link in the second or third post in the thread

Sorry, I mean radio remote keys. I have 2 of these working ok, but a third non-radio key that came with it that doesn't.

has it ever worked, I am assuming that it opens doors and turns in the ignition, could you have possibly lost the pats chip from the key (do these even come apart) incidentally I assume its a black key.

If te procedure doesn't work I suspect its off to fords for tem to program it with their wds 2000 system, I would have a couple of goes though. I don't know if there is any indication that its gone into programming mode ?

Hi, yes its a black key with the chip still in it. I have tried the procedure several times but with no luck. I'm not convinced that its even entering the programming mode. The key does turn the ignition and opens the doors, but just won't de-immobilise. The other two radio keys do the lot and work ok. The key did work a while back, which is whats confusing me, why would it loose its code ?

Has the car ever been a Fleet or rental vehicle, it is possible to turn off the ability to program a spare key in the PCM module

The Spare Key Programming Switch is a WDS programmable switch which provides the capability to enable/disable the normal customer Spare Key Programming Procedure detailed in the owner's manual (customer can program a spare ignition key by cycling two programmed ignition keys and then cycling the new key). This programmable switch is provided as a convenience for rental company fleets or other fleet purchasers who may not want the Spare Key Programming procedure available to the vehicle driver.

Note; The default setting on delivery of all new vehicles is ENABLE.

Looks like a trip to fords or maybe someone with vag-com (if te ability has been disabled)

No its never been a fleet or hire vehicle, I'll try again with it before taking it to dealer, or just make do with the two keys.

This is exactly my problem - can NikpVs method be used if you only have 2 keys in total?

Anyone?
