I have had mine gassed again by the works transport department and I have lost a lot of gas and dye. They emptied it, vacuumed it weighed it and refilled it, put it on a overnight pressure test and not a drop was lost. They even left it running. They went through everything, under the car removed part of the dash, no sign of any dye leaks* and in the end they gave up saying they could not find the leak and advised me to go to an air-con specialist. They only charged me half an hours labour which is cheaper than a regas and I suppose is fair as now I have a system that is working for the moment.

I don't know whether to go to a specialist and spend a lot of money or just keep it topped up with cans from Halfords.

(*The only sign of dye was the filler of the low pressure pipe.)

From what i have read on here about frauds and aircon/cc i would be inclined to find a speacilist in car aircon and let them service and regas as they could probally do it blindfolded where as it sounds that how most fraud dealers do it anyway

That was the case for me too, but the dye was down the pipe a little from the fill point. Didn't take too much notice at the time but it turned out that it was in fact at a small hairline crack and was the source of the leak!

30 minutes to vac down must mean it's a pretty crummy pump, the guy I use (tractor dealer) can vac the gas out in under 10 minutes, it gets filtered, weighed, topped up (if reqd) and then put back in. The dye should only be added if tehre's a leak, some systems specify that the UV dye must not be used.

The machines also carry out a pressure and leak test and I would prefer my leak and pressure test to last longer than 10 minutes.

cheers for trying :( I think I know the place you mean. I may call in on the off chance.

Got home tonight and checked the car and it looks as though the aircon is still working!! The missus was either telling porkies or I have a sneaking suspiscion that the V belt( is that its name?) is loose though I'm probably wrong. The car needs to go in for a service in the next week or two anyway.

Where does one find the low side point to connect the Halfords refill to?

MK1 is under the right hand (driver's side) indicator, MK2 is a pipe with a plastic cap that sticks up just inside the bonnet by the slam bar, again, on the right hand side.
