ridway Posted February 4, 2006 Report Posted February 4, 2006 My cruise control has broken again. I have checked for vacuum leaks and the pump runs fine too. The vacuum releases whenever the brake or clutch pedals are pressed and you can hear relay clicks when you switch on or off on the steering wheel stalk when driving if you listen carefully. Has anyone found any other common fault other than a knacked vacuum pipe? This one has got me beat so far. Rich Quote
dipsomaniac Posted April 10, 2006 Report Posted April 10, 2006 it is almost certainly a split hose. the cc pump is located behind the n/s front indicator. as stated earlier - do a search on cruise control and you will solve the problem Quote
strouf Posted April 11, 2006 Report Posted April 11, 2006 ... located behind the n/s front ...Does this mean right hand side ? Please explain !! Quote
Bigjeeze Posted April 11, 2006 Report Posted April 11, 2006 ... located behind the n/s front ...Does this mean right hand side ? Please explain !! Nearside means Near the Kerb (UK driving) and off side means the side awat from the kerb - So nearside is left and offside is Right. Quote
dipsomaniac Posted April 12, 2006 Report Posted April 12, 2006 procedure as follows:lift bonnetremove near(kerb)side front indicator refit/replace vacuum hose (see image)if the hose is perished you only need to replace that part of the hose using a suitable connector. http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/919/webdscf34262pu.th.jpg Quote
DaveM Posted April 12, 2006 Report Posted April 12, 2006 similar problem.my hoses were ok, but the pump was full of water !replaced pumpjob done Quote

ridway Posted April 29, 2006 Author Report Posted April 29, 2006 Sorted. Cruisecontrol is now working again. This is the second failure, the first was just a leaking perished hose where it connected to the vacuum pump. This fixed it worked fine for 3k then broke again. This time after much hard work, taking half the dash to bits I found the problem to be the vac pump assembly again. I discovered there are 2 parts to the pump. The first is the pump itself, which is ok but it also contains a relief valve. This is obviously the valve that releases the vacuum when you touch the brake or clutch. Close inspection shows three wires to the pump a common which is brown/red a feed to the relief valve which is blue/white and a feed to the vac pump motor which is black. I found that both the pump and the relief valve were getting power but the relief valve was not sealing right. When I investigated by removing the pump cover I found rust around the electromagnetic former of the valve. The relief valve is closed when the electro magnet is energised and the rust was quite bad as to prevent a good seal. Carefully cleaning with a spot of oil seems to have freed the valve slightly and allowed a seal again so the cruise control is up and running again.I suspect the rust may have been caused by moisture through condensation as the body of the pump does suck air in to the chamber.I suspect the repair not to work forever as the electro magnet former is quite corroded and I expect the seal not to remain for long so a new pump assem might be required. If anyone is suffering these symptoms it may be worth a look Rich Quote
Mauser Posted April 30, 2006 Report Posted April 30, 2006 Thanks Rich,Always worth posting your findings, I have same model as you and appreciate any comments on future failures :D.Simon Quote
Guest Snooper601 Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 Hi Guys, I'm new to this forum, but a long time Galaxy owner, bought new in 98 and done 139K miles. I have an intermittent cruise control problem, I have replaced the control unit, one from the stsates via ebay for $60 plus post, but the fault has come back! When it is in the faulty mode the relay does not click when you switch the power on on the stalk control. Any ideas? PSHave had the hose problem at the pump and shaken out the water from the pump as well, and also replaced the brake lite switch at one point for the lights not working. Cheers Quote
NikpV Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 does this happen all the time ? wonder if something like faulty switch on the clutch/brake so its being told to turn off the cruise all the time, haven't a clue whether the swich on the clutch does anything else? ps I have an auto so no clutch  but I think that touching the clutch disengages the cc Quote
Guest Snooper601 Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 Hi Nikpv, The clutch switch avos out ok when the fault is present, so I don't think it's that. As the relay goes silent it has to be power related, when I last installed a control unit I bound the wiring loom tighter together as it was starting to pull apart, that old tar tape is horrible stuff. I may have to start running parallel wires in to bypass the break, if that's whats happening. BTWThe clutch switch works exactly the same as the brake switch, it dumps the vacuum and turns the power off. Stops the engine revving it's nuts off. Cheers Quote
El Dingo Posted May 21, 2006 Report Posted May 21, 2006 As stated above, the cc pump is located behind the n/s front wing. I have just fixed mine today (because of a perished hose). Some observations:1. You can get a quick look at the hoses/connection to the front of the pump via the sliding window in the wheel arch liner (used when changing indicator bulb on cars with Xenon headlamps). A torch and mirror job!2. On cars with Xenon headlamps you can remove the entire headlamp assembly to get access to the pump via the four mounting screws, however (and for any headlamp removal) the beam alignment will have to be reset.3. The pump can also be accessed by removing the wheel arch liner (10 screws, one hidden behind the liner where it fits under the bumper). Quote
mikej Posted July 5, 2006 Report Posted July 5, 2006 When people mention cc pump are we talking about the canister type looking thingy behind the nearside indicator this is the one were the pipe that goes to it normally splits ? i notice that some people mention changing this due to being full off water if this is the one then can anyone tell me how much they are to buy and a possible part number .I repaired the common split pipe and noticed the cannister was full of water , emptied but still no cruise so was wondering if it was worth chancing it and replacing it.... pj_andrew Posted October 9, 2006 Report Posted October 9, 2006 procedure as follows:lift bonnetremove near(kerb)side front indicator refit/replace vacuum hose (see image)if the hose is perished you only need to replace that part of the hose using a suitable connector. Sounds so simple. Tried to remove nearside fron indicator to get at the pump but no joy. Removed two screws (with star shaped heads) from top of light cluster and one from down the side but the light cluster wouldn't budge. There seemed to be another screw down the back but I couldn't reach it. Surely there's an easier way! Quote

Colm Trainor Posted May 2, 2007 Report Posted May 2, 2007 Sorry for a stupid question but where is the pump on the Mk i V6? I have looked in both wheelarches having taken out the indicators as well as underneath the car and all around the underbonnet area but so far cannot find it! There is nothing in the ns wheelarch and only air con pipes in the os wheelarch! Quote
28vr6 Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 If your Gal has CC then the pump is in the NS wing behind the indicator with associated pipes and wiring :D Quote
burky 4x4 Posted May 19, 2007 Report Posted May 19, 2007 Did you find the problem, I am at the same stage. Pump and hose OK, good vac and release. Richard (Spinkhill Derbys) 2.8 V6 Auto 4x4 '99 122k Quote
Steve S. Posted May 19, 2007 Report Posted May 19, 2007 Dear Richard, This place might be of use. www.remanufactor.com It's in the Netherlands. Sent my c/c unit there , cured the problem. I had changed pump and tubes to no avail. Unit behind rad/cass , air con facia unit. Cheers, Steve S. Quote
Bob1 Posted June 6, 2007 Report Posted June 6, 2007 Hi guys,Just as information to all of you with CC problems like me. My Galaxy Ghia -97 Auto suffered from intermittent Cruise Control. After checking all possible things concerning the vacuum system and the electrical system (wires and switches) with no success I had to face that it could be the control box. A new one was offered to me at my local garage for about 500e, so I took it out and sent it to the following place for test/repair:http://www.remanufactor.com/.After a week I got it back and they took 75euros to fix it. The repair included a one year warranty. Also, the deal is, if they find it working ok when testing, the price is only 25e.Now after about 1000km of driving it is still working fine... Quote
jccd Posted September 23, 2007 Report Posted September 23, 2007 Just like to say thaks for giving me the info to tackle my cruise control that has not worked for a year of so. I was under the bonnet investigating the infamous windscreen wiper linkage siezure & thought I would have a go at the cruise control vacuum pump hose. Anyway the hose on the pump was cracked & an hour later & 50p for a new length of hose all sorted. A couple of issues I came across were;1. I could not figure out how to disconnect the headlamp electrics plug (Mk II 2.3 petrol), so had to tackle the hose replacement with the lamp dangling/propped up. Does anyone know how to seperate these plugs?2. When pushing the hose onto the top fitting of the vacuum pump I inadvertantly unclipped the pump from one of it's rubber mountings. This was a pain in the *** to get back on again. But I managed to do it by holding the end of the rubber mounting with a pair of long nosed pliers & stretching the mounting whilst pushing the pump backplate over the stretched mounting. It took a few attempts but got there in the end. I think it would have been a bit easier if I could remove the whole headlamp. Cheers JCCD Quote
