dipsomaniac I couldn't squeeze any pair of clips. There appeared a very slim catch on the top, just one piece of plastic going over another about 1mm thick & a more substansial catch on one side which I tried sliding a flatblade screwdriver into to release any kind of catch but could not get it to part at all? I should of taken a photo but it's all boxed up now. But I will try & post one.

Hi Guys, I'm now the proud owner of my new 51 plate Mk2 2.3 Galaxy Ghia, fantasic motor. But I have a few problems I need to sort, the 1st was the cruise control, which was an easy fix, as previously mentioned, behind the passenger's side headlight is the servo for the cruise control, and sure enough, there was (barely) the disintergrating rubber hose. I simply dug around in the garage for some random hose, which I found a piece from a Rover 214 (a bit thicker and with a smaller diameter of hole, but good piece of pipe all the same) and after a bit of fiddling and heat the pipe in warm water it slid on a treat, and so can now enjoy the comforts of driving down the motorway without having to use the accelerator. The only problem I had was finding the screws, the two at the back of the light require a long driver to enable you to get to them, and they only require a couple of turns as the light will slide off without having to fully remove the screw. Also, worth remembering to plug the wiring loom back into the light before refitting as its a bit tight once the light is back in place I had the light in and out 5 times once I remebered to put everything back! lol. Anyway hope this can help anyone if needs be, plus cheers for the help in the first place guys!

procedure as follows:

  • lift bonnet
  • remove near(kerb)side front indicator
  • refit/replace vacuum hose (see image)

if the hose is perished you only need to replace that part of the hose using a suitable connector.

LOL thanks alot, just brought my 1999 galaxy last week decide to tackle the non cruise control and errrr some numpty has put a new piece of hose on but has connected it to the WHITE connector thing!!

No, TDI is electronic - not vacuum. Common problems on TDi is failure of cruise switch (check you havent pushed the slider to the off position), or failure of the brake switch or clutch switch.

Hi, After reading all the useful help, does anyone know where the CC relay should be is it under the bonnet, with the others?, as I cant hear mine switching on/ off, also does anyone know what sort of relay I need if it's not present.

Hi,

looking at the photo of the pipe and Cruise unit, where does the pipe run to once it leaves the cruise unit?

 

Also, does anyone have a schematic or diagram showing the rear washer pipe layout?

The pipe that comes off the CC pump goes to a coupler just under the battery. A right pain in the arse to re-connect. I used a piece of tubing in boiling water and a LONG set of long nose pliers to re-connect it ammong the mass of cables.

 

Just to note after changing the tube I am still trying to get the CC working.

Im sure I can hear mine clicking behind the glove box or just to the left of the radio. I'd go and check for you but the car's all tucked away in the garage as I about to go away for 4 months. When the cruise control is turned on you should hear it click, even when the car is stationary.

Cheers for your reply I didn't think it worked when stationary, looks like I need to delve into my dash somewhere, if you do find it please let me know.

I know exactly where this unit resides and it is a real pain to get at.

It is under the passengers side centre console panel attatched to the inside of the metal framework by 2 bolts.

Getting at this will lacerate your hands, don't ask how I know that.

Access is incredibly restrictive, I actually modified the metal frame work slightly  and accessed it through the radio access area.

Anyone know where the CC relay is situated in the 2.3 mk1 as I can't seem to locate it anywhere? Also the ECU .

Lets continue this post. 

I have found and repaired the hose mounted to the pump which had the issues mentioned.

but this did not solve my issue.

 

I did read there are more collections, but can't find them.

I can hear another leak when I blow/suck the hose which connects to the pump.

I hear this somewhere else under the bonnet but can't locate this.

Is there someone who has a photo showing where the white tube goes to, and where it connects to another rubber hose(which can be the other leaking end)

 

(I ordered a Haynes manual, so also hope this can show me where to look.)

On mine the tube that comes from the pump in the wing runs under the battery where there is a coupler that connects to another pipe.  This then runs up the passenger side, and then up to the brake/accelerator pedal, however I have not traced this as I am trying to find the ECU at the moment.  Cant say I've spent much time on it lately as I've been away again with work.

I have found it and have repaired it, not my Cruise control works

 

The white pipe under the battery ends above the brake reservoir where it goes to a silicone tube again, showing exactly the same signs as at the side of the pump.

this is a 50cm hose which is connected to a T connector just above the brake pedal, which connects to the brake, and to another T connector which goes to the clutch and to the gas pedal controller.

if at any of these places the vacuum is released the gas can not stay activated so that is the build in security.

 

the hose connected to the white pipe was teared and i replaced this for a new one, ordered on Ebay for 3.75 inc delivery (2M length)

from the inside of the car, behind the fuse box, I pushed the new hose trough the hole. It showed up near the air inlet of the engine. (I removed the air filter pipe to be able to access the Cruise control hose)

If the new hose does not want to go trough the hole, use some washing liquid as lubricant.

After I found where the old broken hose was located, I have fixed it in around 20 minutes including dismounting and mounting everything needed (Air inlet, Fusebox)

Can anyone tell me where this pipe should ultimately terminate please??

Also, this thread mentions being able to hear relay clicking noises when turning on the CC switch.....under what conditions does this happen on yours, is the engine running or just ignition "on"...I can't hear anything obvious.
