Hello, this is the first time I have ever posted so please be nice to me.

I have a 2.3 galaxy and have recently noticed a total lack of power when under load. There seems to be loads of induction noice but no power. Car seams to be fine in first gear but anything else and it does'nt want to know, especially up hill and when towing (because yes I forgot to mention we tow). We are supposed to be going away in the caravan on Thursday for easter, but sod's law is upon us again and we cannot resolve this problem.

We have tried everything, a friend of ours who is a very good mechanic as had a look and cannot find any fault, we ourselves have checked the usual, all pipes, changed air filter, etc. So far we have had a new back and mid box put on, new air flow meter, new cam shaft sensor, new plugs and two diagnostics (both of which showed no codes), spent an absolute fortune (desprate to go away on thursday).

Any suggestions Pleeeeease

Hello, that was quick. Thanks.

Had an emissions test and it passed however we still wasn't convinced and so took CAT off today, Had a look and it seams fine, all intack and can see day light through it. Had a little shake and nothing seams loose.

EGR has been mentioned to me before but I cannot locate it. Any suggestions.

I am booked in with Ford on tuesday but I would rather sort it myself than pay their fees.

Thanks cheryl

First timer here, I also have a 2.3 Ghia X, R reg, had it from new, just found this site a month ago fantastic!

Last year we had a nackered cat, replaced it but still felt there was less than 80% power, nothing showed on the computer so replaced the flow meter then the whole exhaust system including another new cat, all Ford parts, still I hear the car labouring, a drone, sounds like the exhaust isn't getting out, but there is no way of that.

Completely lost, as are the mechanics, I think they think I am just being silly, but I have driven the car from new, yes it can still pull away better than most cars if you put your foot down, but I still think I have lost the top 20% of my power, really pissing me off, perhaps a bit of nitrowould be a good idea!

Good luck, and if you find the problem I will be happy to know.

Keep up the great work

EGR = Exhaust Gas Recirculation.

Modern engines run very lean, this results in very high combustion temperatures. When the engine management detects the max combustion temp it needs to reduce it. It does this by dropping some of the exhaust gas back into the inlet manifold. This effectively is a gas that contains little or no oxygen, the net result of that is the capacity of the cylinder and thus the engine has been reduced. Fuelling is reduced by the lamda sensor because the mixture goes rich. In the end, all of this is the same as you reducing throttle which in turn lowers the temp.

If it sticks open, it can have dramatic results in performance. It can stick open mechanically or the solenoid that opens the valve can stick. You will find it as a small pipe that goes from the exhaust manifold to the inlet manifold with a fairly large disc on top of it with small pipe(s) attached. They are quite difficult to fault find, often replacement is the best bet.

No problem. I had very similar problems with a Cosworth powered 2.9 Scorpio, it drove me mad and was a devil of a job to find. There are no error codes recorded because the system simply thinks you are not calling for power. My cossie had a 0-60 time of around 13 seconds until the fault was cured it then dropped to 7.9 seconds. I knew I'd found the fault! it took about 7 weeks and

Hello, yet another full day of looking for this bloody EGR. Am not even sure what it lookes like. If anybody has any images I would be most grateful if you could send them to me.

Thanks

Hello again. just to let you know, dont know if it will make any difference, but before we changed the Air Flow Meter we unplugged it and drove the car without and it made no difference what so ever as when the air flow meter was attached. Spoke to a Ford mec, who seams to think that maybe the onboard computer has not recognised that the new part has been put in and it will need re coading. Any idears.

Thanks

sniff, sniff, .......... yep,............ thats it,................ PURE BULLSHIT again from a mechanic. Don't listen to him, the ECU will respond to the signals if they're there. It's not told about components like MAF's etc, only what to do with the signal.
