I can see that there have been a lot of posts about this kind of power loss problem but I wondered if there is a way to work out what the problem is without taking the car into a dealer as I don't have a lot of faith ( or vast amounts of money either ) in main dealers.

Car drives great until warm then suddenly while accelerating it is like someone turned off the turbo. i.e major lack of power although engine still runs smooth, no noises etc.

Switch off engine and restart ( engine takes alot of cranking before it will fire up ) then everything is back to normal until a few miles on and same happens again.

As your power loss tends to be sudden and resets itself after switching the engine off, it is unlikely to be the MAF. From what you describe, I would suspect something in the turbo boost control causing an overboost fault - this switches the ECU into limp mode (hence the loss of power) and resets itself after switching the engine off. The cause could be the turbo vane control solenoid or a blockage somewhere in the vacuum system, or the variable vanes in the turbo may be sticking.

Does the power loss always happen at higher engine speeds? Normally, if the problem is with the turbo boost control for whatever reason, the switch to limp mode occurs at somewhere over 3000 rpm. If this is the problem, VAGCOM should show an overboost fault code.

Hope this helps.

I would be inclined to think it may be the accelerator position sensor as it is reset by cylcing the ignition.

Check out the pedal position sensor.

i had this problem mine came up with over boost sensor reset by ignition  turned out to be turbo got new one done by ford no problem since (touch wood)

Can confirm, not the MAF. That causes a stable loss of power, not reset by anything. To be absolutely sure, just try temporarily unplugging it (15 second job) - you'll think that the engine has dropped off. Incidentally, when doing this test, that's when I found out that some oik hadn't plugged mine back in properly when last fiddling.....

Well worth the investment for a VAG-COM lead and download the free software. The car will tell you where it hurts... (except for a Mk1 Booster Heater fault!)

The problem definately occurs over 3000 rpm. If you drive very carefully it is possible to stop the problem happening but it requires very gentle use of the right foot.
