galaxyr Posted April 4, 2006 Report Posted April 4, 2006 My s reg galaxy tdi has covered 193,000 miles and still goes very well. However there is play in the top suspension struts I think. When I jack up the car with the wheel dangling as if to change a wheel I can move the wheel and sus up about half an inch (both sides). There appears to be 'play' in the top part and someone else I know with a Galaxy had the same problem until he took it to a garage. I think they just tightened the top nut but not sure. Anyone come across this problem please? It seems to drive ok with no apparent obvious slackness. Roy Quote
Guest galaxykid Posted April 4, 2006 Report Posted April 4, 2006 Hit the search engine! IIRC look under the name Topbloke? for top mounts? he posted a tech bulletin about MOT tests on these and how they shouldn't be checked with the wheels off the ground :D but with the vehicle resting on the ground supporting it's self Quote
galaxyr Posted April 5, 2006 Author Report Posted April 5, 2006 Thanks for that ...very interesting. Quote
Guest mbev51 Posted April 5, 2006 Report Posted April 5, 2006 hiMy sharan has now done 186k. About 30k ago I changed all shocks. The front ones were like yours when off the ground. My advice is to leave well alone its normal to have movement when in the air. The back ones on mine were shot. Its not a nice job doing the front ones, I had to chisel the nuts off the top of each strut and the hub carrier pinch bott on the lower end of the strut needs heat to get it off. Wait until MOT man tells you to do it. Quote
Guest Snooper601 Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 I have had problems with the front strut top bearings/spring seats. I think that they are the same size that are fitted on the Golf, too small for the Galaxy? The top spring mounts seem to elongate the hole for the damper rod and then it can clonk about giving play. It's a bit dificult because of access but if you use a plug socket that has a hex on the outside at the top you can use a large offset ring spanner and still have the 7mm allen key down the centre of the plug socket to hold the damper rod still, lube it witrh copper grease on assembly to make it easier next time.
