Had a guy come to work today to check some of our trucks over with his laptop.

Got speaking and he said he had vagcom and the lead with him, great!!

So talked him into checking the codes on my booster heater but it couldn't communicate with it. It was fine with everything else engine etc?

Is there any fuses I should be checking?

I'm assuming you have a MK1 Gal, my apologies if I'm wrong.

Lot's of people with MK1 Gals all experience difficulty getting VAG Com to talk to the aux heater, therefore, it's not necessarily something wrong with yours.

It seems the only people who can access it is the dealers :D

Absolutely !

Having spent hours trying to get VAG-COM to recognise the heater, I'm now trying the process of unplugging it and leaving it to see if I can get it to forget that it was faulty.

I found the electrical checks in the Ford TIS very useful, the current consumption of the fan motor and how to run it up, the typical resistances of the flame failure and over temperature sensor and expected current consumption of the glowplug. The only thing not checkable is the operation of the control mosule itself.

I also found useful the D5W pdf which is elswhere on the site. The D3W-Z fitted to the Mk1 is very similar in construction and operation to the D5 (i.e. I couldn't see any difference)

By tonight, my booster will have been unplugged for a week - if that doesn't work, I'll try a fortnight, then a month etc. Come October, I'll give it up and wheel it in to a dealers (possibly an Eberspacher one, not a Ford!)

John

PS So what is so different between FDS2000/WDS2000 (the Ford diagnostics) & VAG-COM then ? Perhaps we ought to form a club and buy an Eberspacher control unit for hire out to each of the Mk1 owners out there !
