Guest sufc38 Posted April 4, 2006 Report Posted April 4, 2006 Hi All, Hope someone can shed a bit of light on a problem that I had today. Yesterday gearbox was fine, got in the car this morning and the gearbox seemed to be stuck in sport mode, only changing up when revs were pretty high, (I'm pretty sure it's what sport mode feels like cause mine ain't the quickest V6 in the world and normally I can only get it to really shift buy hitting the kick down.) Went out at lunchtime and at first gearbox felt normal, then went back into sports mode (all with normal driving not booting it). Then coming home tonight the gearbox felt normal again. Question is, has the sport mode just started working for some reason or is there something wrong with the box. (god I hope not) Could it have anything to do with the gearbox speed sensor or the throttle cable position sensor?? Any Ideas??? PS, had the fluid checked about six months ago, but not entireley sure the guy really knew what he was doing, as when I mentioned checking it hot and cold, I just got a blank expression!! Quote
Guest 2.4children Posted April 4, 2006 Report Posted April 4, 2006 Had a similar problem with my auto box last year. If you disconnect the battery for about 5 minuites the ECU that controls the gearbox will reset itself, then as you reconnect and start to drive it will `learn`your driving style and return to normal. Otherwise try an auto electrician with a fault code reading machine and see if anything comes up. 2.4children. Quote
Guest galaxykid Posted April 4, 2006 Report Posted April 4, 2006 When you say sport mode? if the box switchable? or is it an semi intelligent one that adapts to your driving style? if it's the later try what 2.4 says and empty it's memory :D I think you will have to disconnect the battery for longer than five minutes though to allow any residual back up systems to totally drain! and dont do it if you dont have the code for the radio :D as thats a sore topic to some members when you ask for it :D if that doesnt help then as 2.4 suggests get the codes read and go from there :D Quote
Guest sufc38 Posted April 4, 2006 Report Posted April 4, 2006 Thanks, will try to disconnect the battery first!! Quote
chromedome Posted April 4, 2006 Report Posted April 4, 2006 I've read on the forum that the gearbox ecu wiring can sometimes chaf on things and cause electrical problems so worth a check. I think the ecu is near the battery, perhaps someone may offer more on this. Quote
W4F7Y Posted April 7, 2006 Report Posted April 7, 2006 hi all i have got galaxy its a 2.3 ghia auto with a lpg conversion drives ok but mines doing this high rev thing it changes in to 2nd at 4000k rpm then if i turn it off normal then after a bit it will mess up again do you think it is the ecu how much for a new or diff one any idea thanx for your help Quote
dipsomaniac Posted April 7, 2006 Report Posted April 7, 2006 i don't think it is a faulty TCM (transmission control modul). Try disconnecting the battery as stated earlier. i had a similar problem to sufc38 - at times gearbox seemed to be stuck in sports mode. Switching the car off for a time would usually sort it out for a while - you could go weeks without it happening again. eventually due to other gearbox faults i had to have the gearbox reconditioned - i haven't had the problem since but can't say whether it was the recon or the battery being disconnected that solved the problem. these gearboxes are very complex, if you have a problem you should:disconnect battery for a time (radio code)check for any wiring loom damagecheck transmission fluid levelconsult an autobox specialist to read fault codes and advisepray for cheap solutionUnless it is under warranty it is no good taking it to a main dealer as they will probably only sub the work out to an autobox specialist. W4F7Y Posted April 8, 2006 Report Posted April 8, 2006 its not done it again yet asw soon as it does i will discon the batt thanx for all your help do any of you know how or where i check the transmisson fluid Quote
Guest sufc38 Posted April 12, 2006 Report Posted April 12, 2006 Hi, The lack of change thing is still going on with my gearbox, but I can usually sort it out by turning off the ignition and removing the key. Don't suppose there's anyone near Stockport with VAGCOM that could read the fault codes for me is there? Today at one point it wouldn't change out of first, until I removed the key from the ignition, just switching the engine off didn't seem to help. Thanks Mike Quote
Guest sufc38 Posted April 13, 2006 Report Posted April 13, 2006 Ok, Had the battery disonnected for about 4 hours this morning and whe reconnected, everything was fine. However when I set off for home tonight, back to no gear change, managed to sort it out by turning off the ingnition a few times and removing the key, the strage thing is that I've noticed that the gear shift lock, doesn't operate when I'm having the problems, but does when the gearbox is working ok. (hope you can follow this). Does this point to a break in the wiring loom, (ie are the gearshift lock and the possible cause of my problem in the same part of the loom.) Where would I start looking for possible breaks in the gearbox loom, (I'm not very technical) Getting really fed up with this now, and I'm sure you lot are getting fed up of me going on about it. Hope someone can help Mike :D :D :o :o :D :D Quote
NikpV Posted April 13, 2006 Report Posted April 13, 2006 that the gear shift lock, doesn't operate when I'm having the problems we had this problem with the shift lock - was a dodgy brake pedal switch - sprayed with wd40 and its still going strong 3 years on :o :o (touch wood) Quote
Guest sufc38 Posted April 13, 2006 Report Posted April 13, 2006 Hi, I know the switch is ok as it was only replaced a couple of months ago. I think the problem is that there is a break in the wiring somewhere and the brake switch and something that controls the gear change are on the same part of the loom. Mike Quote
NikpV Posted April 13, 2006 Report Posted April 13, 2006 have you ever had the gearbox worked on , apparently unless supported correctly tension on the loom can break the wire, the problem is that your problem appears to clear after switching off and removing key without disturbing the 'break in the wire' which made me think of the switch because you would probably have to brake before turning engine off and at least apply the brake to disconnect the interlock before re-engaging drive so a dodgy switch may correct itself during this procedure if you see what I mean :o Quote
NikpV Posted April 13, 2006 Report Posted April 13, 2006 Ps - I think there are two switches on the brake pedal :o Quote
bigdaddy Posted April 13, 2006 Report Posted April 13, 2006 Also check ur brake light switch,,,,,because its newish, does not mean its not faulty,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,never rule out a new part,, as not being faulty :D Quote
