Do all of that and that should get your system back up and running properly, it may of course take a while and thus the rest of us will be able to get a few words in on here.

Good luck,

I did that cepheus ages ago but it is on my startup programmes!!

Ill check my hard drive now...ummm....

D has 1.32GB free space

C has 22.4GB free space.

went to symantec, their products conflict with AVG and symantec wanted me to remove AVG

When Bearshare opens, go to Setup, then Options and untick the box next to "Launch Bearshare on system startup" this will do what it says on the tin.

Obviously nothing wrong with storage space on hard drive!

Norton and AVG run fine together on XP as long as windows firewall is disabled (which is a crock of shite anyway). Been working fine for over a year on my PC.

Did you try the online checks from the link on my last post?

I would recommend a few things if I could (am going with cheapest ish):

1) you have no where near enough ram to run a pc in this day and age and especially NOT a P4. I would suggest getting a 512 stick - as your pc is obviously noy dual channel. what you do - get the old stick of 256mb out - take it to a pc joint - show it to them and say I want 512mb in a single stick that will work with this. [for them : - you DONT have dual channel - and you want the SAME Bandwidth, and equal or faster latencies] I would guess that you have either DDR 333 running at 266 or 266 itself, OR PC 133 - in which case - you should be GRATEFUL to your pc for being alive. as such 512mb 266/333 should be about 25 quid (fitting is free or do it yourself). If its 133 SD, bin the board get a cheap board (

Hi mo4

i use norton its ok but a bit memory hungry so you will need 512 of ram.

Get a 160 gig hd about 55 quid for the ata version i use an 80 as a back up.

If it all goes to pot i wipe my main hd with Dban (dariks boot and nuke its free)and reboot from the previous back up

You could use your 40gig as backup as long as you have no bad sectors.

Hope this helps

Hi MO4 I've installed Zonealarm on 5 different computers for friends and family and upto now have had no problems. Get the updates as and when they notify and it just works away in the background. It will ask everytime a new programme wants to access the internet and you just have to tick the box if you're happy to let it. Once you've given permission for a programme it wont ask again. You can change the settings manually from the Control Centre. Just had a look and the firewall has blocked over 19000 external attempts to access my computer since beginning of the year!!!!! ;) Andy.

I was getting alets every few seconds...then when i went on to ebay it said it was forbidden..on here there were no animations..i just hadnt a clue what to do!!

I can still see your bum gyrating even with Zonealarm. :D Did you get the PRO version or just the bog standard FREE firewall? I've just got the firewall and I have no problems with Ebay. You have to make sure that the windowsXP firewall is turned OFF so that Zonealarm is the only one running. ;) Andy.

I use AVG, which is also available as a free download, for my antivirus and Zonealarm for the firewall and email filter, they work fine together and I no longer have to suffer the problems of Norton causing everything to be soooooo slowwwwww!! ;) Andy.

but summit got thru that made everything go tits up

Same thing happened to the girl second from the right in MM's photo!!

From what I understand you need an antivirus package, such as AVG, to scan your emails and a firewall, such as Zonealarm, to protect from external access attempts. Do you run XP2?, if so, then most of the images that arrive in emails will be blocked by default, you should have a bar across the top of your preview pane in Outlook Express that you have to click on to show the images. The same will happen in Internet Explorer if pop-ups are on the page. You have to click to allow the pop-ups. Andy.

I use AVG for anti virus, XP SP2 firewall and my Netgear hardware firewall.

I was using Microsnot Defender for spyware, but got pi$$ed off with it reminding me I hadn't scanned for 4 days, then giving me an error when I told it to scan.

Just deleted defender and I can feel the speed increase already.

another bit of MS bloatware.

If only I could convince SWMBO to use Linux - and still use VagCom, Elsawin, Autocad and my Freestyle monitor

XP 2 contains Service Pack 2 that should make Windows more secure. It is available as a free, I think, download from Microsoft you can order a disc from the same site. If your version of WindowsXP is less than 2 years old it should already have Service Pack 2 from new. Andy.
