And b4 you say take it to someone,no one can look at it for a week as ive lready tried that.. mumof4 Posted April 3, 2006 Author Report Posted April 3, 2006 Anyone??what is the key for safe mode startup??? :D Quote
mumof4 Posted April 3, 2006 Author Report Posted April 3, 2006 Thank you :D !!.I cant get into my start menu to create a backup/recovery disk so im flying by the seat of my pants here.Im goint to go now and i may see you all later!! :D Quote
mumble_bee Posted April 3, 2006 Report Posted April 3, 2006 ok heres some advice if you're up for it.. Start->run-> Msconfig->startup->disable allthen click services->hide all microsoft services->disable all of course this will also disable your firewall - which isnt good - unless you have xp firewall. but at least while you're not connected to the internet you can see if its working fine. then you can re-enable your firewall etc.. from the startup and services tab - but thats step 2. mumble_bee Posted April 3, 2006 Report Posted April 3, 2006 and I think your avatar is the virus :D Quote
mumof4 Posted April 3, 2006 Author Report Posted April 3, 2006 ok..i have a firewall up but i dont know if windows one..i am assuming so as i have xp Quote
mumof4 Posted April 3, 2006 Author Report Posted April 3, 2006 i thought about doing a total system recovery, but thats a last resort which i dont really want to have to do.I cant save owt so ill lose everything;. Quote
mumof4 Posted April 3, 2006 Author Report Posted April 3, 2006 Oh well..guess im gonna find out how bad!!.Catch you all later if i get it sorted.xxxxxxxxx.Marian.xxxxxxxxxx Quote
mumble_bee Posted April 3, 2006 Report Posted April 3, 2006 you dont need to do a recovery - I havent re-installed in I dunno 4 years or something - worst case scenario is a registry restore - unless you've recently installed NEW PS2 Drivers from something like a logitech wireless kit.. then you're in trouble Quote
mumof4 Posted April 3, 2006 Author Report Posted April 3, 2006 I havent installed anything..hubby looked at porn!!!!!!!!!!!1 Quote
mumof4 Posted April 3, 2006 Author Report Posted April 3, 2006 i know that my partition table is reading error..would this have something to do with it all? Quote
mumble_bee Posted April 3, 2006 Report Posted April 3, 2006 partition table error - on the system drive - well in windows - thats almost unusablehowever unless we're talking about physical damage - ie: bad sectors - you should be able to sort it out.other browsing can be more dangerous. you really need a combination of: firewall(+nat if possible), anti-spyware/adware,anti-virus Quote
mumof4 Posted April 3, 2006 Author Report Posted April 3, 2006 I had all that and now look at me..cant do bloody anything.Everything was ok till hubby decided to look at porn :D I have adaware se, Quote
mumof4 Posted April 3, 2006 Author Report Posted April 3, 2006 I darent disconnect at the mo as i know i wont be able to reconnect..nothing is working on my desktop, nothing in my start menu(cant get in to it),i managed to connect by fluke as i dont know much bout pcs.Registry??no idea. Quote
mumof4 Posted April 3, 2006 Author Report Posted April 3, 2006 My pc wont shut off, have to switch it off at the plug in the wall which i know is not good,i know that for the last week my pc has kept expanding the virtual memory..i havent got a clue what this is as its never happened before. Quote
mumble_bee Posted April 3, 2006 Report Posted April 3, 2006 well tbh - the best thing to do in that case is 1) msconfig - disable all non ms services and all startup2) delete/rename any unknown exe files in c:\ or c:\windows\temp or c:\windows\system32(2) disconnect from the net (or just engage an internet lock or whatever its called)3) run your antivirus - ideally updated- if not (as yours is avg-greyed -skip this)4) run your adaware - deep scan5) reboot and do step 2)6) adaware again7) check msconfig - have any new programs added themselves to startup ? if so they are your problem, if not then we're 1 step closer to fixing it8) if 7 is NO - then make sure your firewall is up and go to a free antivirus site - like www.antivirus.com - they are trend av - use their HOUSECALL product its free and java based, if 7 is yes.. then you need an antivirus that can pick up that stuff9) pray Quote
mumble_bee Posted April 3, 2006 Report Posted April 3, 2006 pc not shutting off is not a HUGE problem - its common in loads of scenarios like: driver conflicts, hdd read errors (non-phys), etc....... (oh also when you have spyware) you can just press the power on button for 4 seconds - or to the count of 10 - whichever is longer :D Quote
mumof4 Posted April 3, 2006 Author Report Posted April 3, 2006 Ok.thanks for that.going to disconnect now!!see you all soon.xx Quote
mumble_bee Posted April 3, 2006 Report Posted April 3, 2006 how do you know its been expanding the virtual memory ? Quote
mumof4 Posted April 3, 2006 Author Report Posted April 3, 2006 I get a message saying the virtual memory is too low so windows is expanding it and any programmes using it will be affected..a little yellow box appears Quote
mumble_bee Posted April 3, 2006 Report Posted April 3, 2006 hrm windows shouldnt do thatif its managed by windows itself ... it sounds like you may actually have some hdd issues.or you have very very little ram and very very little free hdd space on the designated v.mem driveand too many memory resident programs Quote
mumof4 Posted April 3, 2006 Author Report Posted April 3, 2006 No idea what you mean,my pc has 256mb ram,40gb hard drive,1.8ghz.Look,ive got to go out as i want to get some floppies just in case, ill leave it connected till i get back.On here.as i have no idea what hdd means!! Quote
