Am I getting worried for nothing?

I can feel the road through the steering wheel. If I hit a dip or a bump, the car veers a little, a very bumpy ride!!!

I have 215 55 16 tyres fitted and have inflated them to 40psi front and 38psi rear as per owner manual.

Any advice at all?

My front tyres have a fair bit of wear and was thinking it was this, had all the tracking checked and there was no problem with it!

May just need new tyres I suppose?

For what it's worth, I have both models and the steering on the old one is much better than the new one. I felt the same way when I first drove the 115 Ghia and noticed the tyre wear. Now, 1500 miles on, it doesn't seem so bad.

I think that tyre type/wear can be very misleading with this type of problem and, in view of my experience with 'expert' tracking adjusments etc. I would always start with a new set of tyres 'cos they do have a habit of tweaking things which are not the cause of the problem and only mask the true cause.

Uneaven tyre wear can be caused by bad driving habits and lots of other conditions so don't assume the worst immediately. My old banger (140k of hard work) when I bought it had well scrubbed tyres when I bought it. I put new Avons on (

Could be the suspension. I have the same problem on my Galaxy, I took a picture of the top of the suspension.

You can see that we've put some grease on the top plate, just to test it. When you turn the steering wheel, you can see the suspension partially turning and bumping against the top plate.

We've replaced the rubbers underneath the chassis along with the two bearings, but that does not seem to solve the problem. I'll repace the suspension damphers next week I'll keep you informed. I don't think there's something wrong with the springs

See you

I now have exactly same symptoms as Mozzy and Undertaker, with a 55 plate galaxy after about 12,000 miles. Also can feel the wobble at low speed as mentioned on another thread, i will look there next.

Ford dealer blames the tyres, but they are balanced OK, and they are not out of shape, and tracking is at precisely zero. Tyre wear looks like tracking is toing out, but it is not. I am thinging of adjusting tracking to toe-in a little and see if that helps. I am not sure what tracking setting is recommended, and Dealer doesn't know either.

Also thinking of getting an independent report from AA, as there is definitely something wrong. I suspect wheel bearing, drive uni coupling, poss power steering fault, but dealer says all is ok.

Just a thought on this general topic.

Nothing to do with Galaxies, or even Fords, but twice on totally different motors (Montego and Astra estate) I've had wobble and other similar symptoms variable and sometimes worryingly severe. On both occasions and over extended periods Ive been accused of eveything up to halucinations by mechanics who swore that there was nothing wrong but the problems persisted even after replacement of discs, bearings and dampers.

On both occasions the problem was eventually resolved by replacement of the hub itself. On the Montego, this had been damaged by an animal who removed a (perfectly good) bearing with a hammer and chisel and on the Astra, I inherited the fault on an unusually low mileage ex-company vehicle which I then assumed had been faulty for a long time and shelved until they could drop it 'con no-one could find the fault. If I hadn't had the fault on the Montego, I doubt if anyone would have ever diagnosed the fault on the Astra.

On the Montego, the fault wrecked two discs and a tyre before a proper mechanic stripped the whole thing down and checked the run out with a dial gauge. The Astra also had two sets of discs fitted before they finally, and very iratably, did what I asked.

As I said, just a thought...

Hi I know your posts are old but I have a 2005 galaxy and have had lots of problems with tyre wear. The car has allways drifted slightly to the left but this was blaimed on the road camber in my area (several garages have stated this) however, I have had the car 2-years and am on my 3rd set of tyres (Mitchelin 1st, Dunlop second). The dunlops were put on in january 08 and after 10k both front tyres are so worn on the inside edge, the reinforcing nylon is showing through.

I am sure that this is not correct but my local ford garage has carried out a full geom check, tracking & visual check of all components but claim there is nothing wrong - obviously there is  I will be insisting they look at it again as the problem has been there since i bought the car.

I have also been told this type of wear is common on this car??? can anyone confirm this?

I have just had the car checked after putting on some cheeper tyres (why spend a lot when they dont last long) and have been told that the bushes are slightly worn on both sides (too much play) and the n/s trackrod end has slightly more movement than the other side - I am having this checked

Howevger, i wanted to know if anyone else has experienced problems like this with tyre wear and was it resolved?

I have been told by a sharran owner that some parts around the drive shaft or trackrod end have a habit of going after 60-70k miles as is a non lubricating part and there is a lubricating kit one can buy for
