Hi

Not had an auto diesel before. Have had no problems with this at all, very smooth gear changes. has anyone ever had any problems, what do I need to keep an eye on

Thanks

From what I've read on here faulty MAF sensors can cause irratic auto box issues, but this may have been on diesels which are more sensitive to MAF problems than gas guzzlers.

Try a search for both auto gearbox and MAF. (with the full stop as the search facility needs minimum 4 characters to work) and prepare for some in depth reading!!

seen some comments recently but appears little substance on gals - quite a lot of 'on my scorpio' type comments

My 5 speed tiptronic (TDi115) changes gear smoothly and consistently, except after decellerating down to 1st gear at around 5-10 mph and then stepping on the throttle again, when it engages again with a thump.

It's as if the clutch plates are engaging too harshly, but it doesn't happen from a start or in any other gear.

Anyone got any ideas or had the same symptom?

first on the list - check the fluid level

Thanks Nikpv.

I won't get a chance until at least Sunday, but I will report back.

I asked the garage to check the condition and level of the autobox fluid when they did the cambelt last week.

Didn't actually see them do it, but they seemed to understand the procedure, and when I collected the car they said it was fine.

I get the feeling that this phenomenon is ECU related. I won't pretend to fully understand exactly when the torque converter is supposed to lock up, but if the car changes gear smoothly and progressively from a standstill, and seems to do everything else as it should, it is strange that a particular set of circumstances causes this effect.

Perhaps it is a trait of the car. Has anyone else with a 5 speed auto noticed this? It only happens at low speed, but possibly in 1st and/or 2nd gears. I often get it after decellerating when approaching a roundabout, and then accellerating away again without coming to a complete halt. It gives you a noticeable thump in the back - not violent, but noticeable.

DEFFO!!!!

i find its worse if the braking and accelerating is harder.

however on two occasions the "thump" felt like someone had run in the back!

I have had this thump at low speeds after coasting then accelerating. It feels like a slack chain on a motorbike. It has happened since new but only once or twice a year, so I have never regarded it as serious. I have tried to reproduce it many times but never managed to.

When I had a dodgy MAF the gearbox would drop down a gear to 4th at high speeds and the engine go into limp mode. The gearbox would report a torque limit error (or something similar). This nearly caused someone to go into the back of me as it was like slamming on the brakes. The same happens if you lose electrical power, so never cut the ignition when driving to try and reset anything.

Yep, that describes it perfectly; but it is soooo slack that the top of the chain must be almost touching the bottom, and you know that it's soon going to break.

The stresses on the gearbox/drive train must be huge, and I wonder if this might have contributed to some of the autobox failures that have occurred. Nikpv, did you ever discover what caused yours to crunch up?

It would be interesting to find out if this only happens with AG5 gearboxes and not the AG4s, and if so, what the catastrophic failure ratio is between the two.

There is a known intermittent fault with a soft gear change monitor within the valving assembly which is inside the gearbox. If it is only doing it after freewheeling it may be something less expensive. Well worth the expense of going to a REPUTABLE autobox specialist for a test drive and a chat. Ask your main dealer which auto specialist they use - Ford dont work on them, only fit or replace them.

...hopefully i will be getting VAG COM very soon, so will be able to check for any fault codes

I see you've got VAG.COM now. Good move.

Have you found any gearbox faults yet?

oh aye, iv got VAGE now (iv re-named it, teehe)

i haven't yet done a full scan, but have done a scan on the gearbox.

one fault was found.

(IIRC) - "internal memory module error - intermittent"

so what that results, to how the gearbox operates i dont know.

something it does do, is "hold on" to the gears sometimes, when it could easily change up.

perhaps its intermittently forgetting to change gear :16: it would tie in with the error message ;)

i think it could be related

i think i will re-set the faults, drive it.

hope it doesnt hold on to the gears (or any other abnormal things), check again with VAG, see what it says.

repeat with it holding on to the gears.

..but it works so im not going to replace anything.
