Second-hand 2.3

I am looking at a 40k-miler 2.3 (new shape) for my sister and brother-in-law. It mainly seems fine, but there is a bit of tappet noise. I don't remember such a noise being a particular problem from my days with a 2.3. Any ideas if it is likely to be expensive or a major problem?

No tappet noise on mine at 3 times times that milage, so it sounds iffy to me. Has it ever had an oil change ?
