My 99 1.9 TDI 110 BHP Galaxy is suffering from ocasional loss of power. It's exactly the same symptoms as when the MAS airflow fails. (This happened to me a few years ago and I replaced it) I took it into my usual Garage to investigate who 'cleared the memory' and took it on a few test drives unitil it finally failed. The Computer said it was a 'Manifold Compression' failure but I'm not sure what this means. I was hoping to find a list of error codes on the net that may help me read up on the error but no joy.

So starter for 10 'Manifold Compression' ?

Yep, either over-boost or failure of boost I think. Check all the thin vacuum pipes (they look like fuel lines at tehback of the engine bay) to see if any have split or perished.

Hi

I have the car booked into the garage on Monday and will let you know what they find.

As the fault was intermittant I may have been able to rule out a few things before the mechanic has another look but as everyone's opinion is the same I think I will leave it to the experts.

No perished pipes or leakage. By chance I have the old (faulty) mass air flow sensor so I am going to re-install that. Currently an error code of manifold pressure is observed and we have now cleared that code if it it is the MAF then we should now see the same error we observed a few years ago and not the manifold error (hope my logic makes sense)

So I will drive the car with the faulty MAF sensor and hopefully the only error we see is the MAF. I will then buy a new one (once you have paid for it it is sold and can't be returned ;-( ) and hopefully that will be that.

I also have the same problem on exactly the same type of Galaxy. As per other replies l checked all the vacuum pipes and found that the vacuum pipe that leaves the turbo boost thingy should be connected to the air box ,but had come adrift. This was probably my fault as l replaced the airfilter 2 months ago, spookily when the fault developed.Since l reconnected the pipe l have had no problems.

Hope this helps
