Hello,

Hopefully there is somebody who can help please. Noted that one of the 2 driver side rear lights (the one without the brake light) wasn't working so took the cluster out to replace the 5w bulb. At that point in time the 'break light' (5w/21w) stopped working too so no lights on right hand side. Replaced both the bulbs, however, they don't work. Tested the bulbs on the left side and they work fine there. Put them back into the drivers side cluster. No luck.

Then checked the other lights (reverse, fog, indicator on both sides); they all work however not the brake light and the other one on the driver' side. When checking the front lights noted that the small bulb at the front doesn't work either. Tried to work through te manual to see if there maybe is a fuse so I could identify which was blown however have not been able to trace which fuse it is. So it is the drivers side of the car. Beam at the front works both sides.

Anybody can help please please??

Totally puzzled FDM

I had this with some of my lights in the tailgate of my old Galaxy and found it was a wire in the loom that feeds from the main car body into the tail gate, was a bit of a job , but managed to repair it. First noticed problem when the tailgate wouldn't open. That wire had broken as well.

Have done some more testing to see what is going on; the brake lights are working (even the high level brake light has all bulbs working again!), indicator lights are working, front dipped & main beam is working but the right hand side front and rearlights are still not working.... Will bring it to mechanic tomorrow and will let know when I have it back...

Did you try and test for power at the multi plug for the rear lights :D

Brought the Gal to the mechanic and took him a while to find that it actually was the fuse that was blown; although it looked OK it actually was gone. Luckily no cable issue. Thanks again to memorandum & mozzy.

I've exactly the same problem - I don't suppose anyone knows what the fuse number is ?

The only ones that look likley to me are 56/57 Parking Light right/left hand side ? And they look Ok

Thanks John

Maybe these fuses are only used to control the parking lights when they are switched by the indicator lever? As both bulbs are fed by a single wire to each cluster have you checked the power is getting to the cluster?

The front side light is also out, which makes me think more of a fuse problem that broken wire

Try swapping fuses 56 and 57 over, as FDM says they sometimes look OK but don't work. IIRC those little fuses in the top fuse box are a sod to get at and you are better using long nosed pliers than the little fuse puller that Ford provide. Are both your rear bulbs on that side out?

Removed fuses to check them with a meter, both OK, pushed them back and everything is now working so I guess dodgy connection at the fuse box

I have the same problem, i have a european galaxy, the front side light and rear sidelight dont work on one side, for me the left side. The right works. I tested the bulbs they work fine, will try what you did with the fuse. Wanted to check the front sidelight but how do you get it out, in the bonet open its impossible so do you take the unit off somehow?

it makes it harder as my car book is in french so you guys are lucky with english ones. I have to drive back to europe from russia in the next month but no driving at night will be difficult so i must fix this. any suggestions would be helpful.

oh i tested the cluster at the back, there is no power to the unit so i suspect either wire but car is 2002 so it should not be. so something with fuses or the panel, an engineer did have all of it out a few weeks ago is there something he may have done by mistake?

It does sound like a fuse has gone - Check those first.

As for the bulb - You actually get at it under the wheel arch - there is a sliding hatch about mid way in the upper part - If you can't open it or it's encrusted with dirt you will need to take off the wheel arch liner - It has about 8 torx screws. You can't access it without either of these methods. If you can get the hatch open you need small hands!

cheers for the info, I did the following:

1. Checked all fused, all showed ok, changed all still no luck, so moved there position, still no luck.

2. checked the wiring loom from front to back all ok.

3. checked the switch, Right side ok, but the gray with black was dead for the left side.

4. pulled out the panel but could get to nothing that i needed for testing

5. checked left side by applying a passover cable on the switch to the left side from the right this worked and all was fine.

I have temporarily left a join between both the gray with black strip and the right side gray with a dark red strip this works but is not the best solution but at least i have lights on both sides.

can you tell me :

1. Is there a relay that they go through? (Reason the eng who came out and was in there for start problem, turned out to be bad connection on battery with alarm system, was messing around with them, shorting from battery to a relay in the car to start it. but could he have damaged a relay?

2. where do the wires terminate, is there a wiring diagram anywhere as i dont have one, hayes dont have a book for 2002 year and my book is in french, i speak english so a little stuffed.

any help would be great alternatively if this shorting across sides is temp ok, i will wait till i drive back to europe in a month and then get an engineer to look at it.

thanks for the advise its realy helpfull.

Check the wiring to/from the main lighting switch, left and right sidelights are independent circuits to this switch (I know this as its possible to have one side come on before the other if you turn the switch very slowly). Either a wire is adrift or the switch has failed.

Another thing to check is whether right/left sidelights come on with the indicator stalk operated with ignition off.

Do you know the colour code for the switch input for the left and right side? I could only find power on one cable as an input and this was for the right hand side, so i have nothing to judge which is the correct cable unless i take the switch apart to work it out.

Thanks again for the helpful advise.

Had the same problem with my 1.9 Ghia diesel ( 1999 ) It was the mimi blade fuse no 56. Replaced it and lights came back. However it was still showing a fault on the ROS stop and tail light. Changed the bulb with the RNS and the fault hopped over to the other side on the dashboard lights. This obviously confirmed a faulty bulb as opposed to a wiring problem. I ended up changing the bulb 3 times before the fault light finally went.

Moral of the storey...Just because you changed the bulb dont discount that one being faulty also.

I had the same problem and thanks to this forum and a friend on the phone its saved me going to an auto electrician! Above the main 26 fuses is a row of horizontal "mini" fuses. 3 are 5A yellow and 2 of these are the sidelight fuses. Many thanks!
