Guest topcarp2 Posted March 25, 2006 Report Posted March 25, 2006 ok where do i start(mad house i think)yesterday my electris windows went on strike and the drivers side would neither wind up or down.the switch on the drivers door would wind the passenger window down but not up..the passengers side works fine tho from the passenger side switch..today i disconnected the wiring harness from the joint where it goes into the door pillar(drivers side)and found 2 wires had broken ..i fixed one and then tried it and the drivers side window worked fine i then fixed the other broken wire and now i have nothing at all..no windows work from the drivers door switch and now the mirrors dont work also..when i lock the car the light in the top of the door still flashes...i suspect a fuse but when i test all the fuses in the box just below the steering wheel they all seem fine..incidentally none of these fuses are described as bieng for the windows...can anyone help im at the end of my tether..where is the fuse for the windows and the door mirrors... bigdaddy Posted March 25, 2006 Report Posted March 25, 2006 I would disconnect the second wire,,,,and see if it all works again,,,,,,,,,,,,,,maybe the second wire is not connected????????????????? Quote
Guest topcarp2 Posted March 25, 2006 Report Posted March 25, 2006 wey hey ive fixed the bugger!!!!both the wires did need connecting but the problem was that inside the door post there is the socket that holds all the wires and these wires are in blocks and the blocks had come out of the socket hence no contact when i put it all back together..i got a soakin from the rain doin it but was inspired to try my hardest after i phoned an auto electrician this afternoon who told me there aint no fuse for the door electrics and he charges 25 large ones an hour for his work and it was probably the ecu unit that was at fault anyway...makes you think i could have been ripped off big time if i had taken it to him to fix... Gadgetoid Posted March 25, 2006 Report Posted March 25, 2006 Probably not ripped off - if you do a search for 'scuttle drains' you will see that if water is draining to the passenger footwell in a Mk1 Galaxy then it will soak the central locking ECU. Not precisely your symptoms - all the windows should lower by themselves when it rains - but the auto-electrician obviously knows the common faults in Galaxies. Quote
Guest topcarp2 Posted March 26, 2006 Report Posted March 26, 2006 i check under the passengers seat every week for this water ingress and i have to say ive had the car bout a year now and its always been bone dry..i knew this could not have been the cause of my problems..but like you say the garage obviously know of the usual gal faults i just cant help wondering if he would have thought i was gullable and fixed the fault like i did and charged me for an ecu or would he have been honest because to be quite frank all he kept goin on about was i needed a new ecu...thanx for all the help guys ...a day without learning is a day lost...as they say Quote
bigdaddy Posted March 26, 2006 Report Posted March 26, 2006 a day without learning is a day lost...as they say I tell my kids that and they look at me has if I am Daft   Quote
delboyt Posted March 26, 2006 Report Posted March 26, 2006 i read on here some time back that if the ecu gets wet then youremove it & put it into your airing cupbard where it's really warm& leave it there for a day or so & it usually works againmaybe handy to know for the future or a new one will cost about Quote
Guest galaxykid Posted March 26, 2006 Report Posted March 26, 2006 If you do suffer from wet ECU syndrone you would be better off removing the circuit board from the unit first and checking it for signs of corrosion :) removeing any that has built up! with a soft brush and some circuit board cleaner and then drying the board out fully before you replace it, as for the price? this can vary depending on the spec of the board and what functions it has? this unit controls the central locking, global closing and in some case the alarm! but dont pay dealer prices for it try these people NO I'm not connected to them I found then when I was looking for a replacement ECU ;) also it's not just the board that needs drying out but the plugs and the relay thats located in the same are under the seat as well! Guest galaxykid Posted March 26, 2006 Report Posted March 26, 2006 It's where all the windows/sun roof can be opened or shut via the remote or by the key in the lock, to do it via the key, hold the key in the lock/unlock position after the doors have unlocked/locked and the windows should roll down or up :) for as long as you hold the key in that position, the same method is used for the remote hold the locking or unlocking button and the windows will either close or open ;) usefull in the summer to allow the hot air to escape before you get in ;) Quote
mumof4 Posted March 26, 2006 Report Posted March 26, 2006 ahhh..does every gal have it or was it an option? Quote
Guest galaxykid Posted March 26, 2006 Report Posted March 26, 2006 ERR? questionable as the sales brochures dont show it as standard on all models till after 1999 when the LX and ZETEC models appeared, but it does appear to be on all models! with electric front windows! which is all of them :) try it and see? delboyt Posted March 26, 2006 Report Posted March 26, 2006 i got a 1997 glx without the alarm & remote function & it does ittry it out & you will findout as i have been told that if you got central lockingall car doe's it ??don't quote me on that though Quote
johnb80 Posted March 26, 2006 Report Posted March 26, 2006 I thought the global function was only with the key in the lock i.e. not via the remote for obvious safety implications. Thats certainly true on my Cosworth Ultima, 2.3 Ultima and my current Gal. Regards - John Quote
Guest galaxykid Posted March 26, 2006 Report Posted March 26, 2006 On the Mk1's it possible via the remote  on the later Mk2's I believe the feature was removed :D Quote
