Hello all

The wipers on my 2003 TDI Zetec are acting strange. When I have them on, they work fine, but then stop for a few secs, then start up again...i.e. as if they are on intermittently. When the car come to a halt, thay stop and work intermittently (as they should), then when I speed up, they work as normal, then after a short while go working as if they are on intermittent. It seems to be speed related, but I could be wrong! Any ideas please (it's only strated today).

Also, the CD radio (6000 model), the sound goes up and down when I am travelling along, again speed realted as it works fine at idle. Don't know if the two are connected....any ideas

Incidentally, how does the wipers know when to switch off when at idle?

Lastly, the parking sensors seem to have packed in: have a loud tone (beeping) and flashing switch..guess that means they're broken...any ideas...

Oh, the car is coming up for the end of the 3rd year warranty, so I hope these items will be covered by warranty!! Has anyone had experiences about this?

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

As mentioned for parking sensors, check for water in the passenger footwell. If there is do a search for rear washer leaking, blocked scuttles, etc.

The radio volume going up and down is normal, done by sensor.

Wipers, haven't a clue.

Should all be covered by warranty if under 3 years/60,000 miles.

You could be suffering from the dreaded wiper spindle seizure? it could be that the wind pressure helps them operate and travel up the screen? and the motor is manageing the return stroke under duress?

as stated the radio's behavior is normal  it's called AVC Auto Volume Control, you switch this feature on or off via the menu button, press the left hand side of the menu button repeatedly till you see AVC OFF in the display then hit the seek button to switch the function on or off as desired? or to set the levels when you have the function enabled

Thanks folks. Have checked the passenger side: floor is flooded. Took carpet up and sound proofing...stinks to high heaven. Certainly a leak somewhere..checked the connection for rear wash (black cable) didn't see anything wrong.

I'm going to show my ignorance now..blocked scuttles..what's that and where are they?

As the car is still under warranty (thankfully, but runs out in 2 weeks time), I think i should leave it to the dealership to sort it (assuming it's under warranty).

do a search on scuttle drains there are plenty of topics explaining how to clear these....

Rear Washer. You are looking for the water pipe that runs along the side of the passenger footwell. I think near the pillar behind the trim is a connector that is prone to coming apart, hence you wash the inside of the car not the back screen

The saga continues....washer pipe is ok. We had terrible rain last night...footwell now like swimming pool. Scuttles clear of leaves etc.

Car due its service tomorrow, so will get them to check and find fault...cars under warranty, so thought it best to get them to sort it out...am assuming it'll be covered by warranty..

Thanks to everyone who posted...much appreciated.

Just an update:

water in footwell was due to scuttle being blocked. Parking sensors are knackered due to water getting at the parking module...

Johnb80 or Galaxykid - you seem to know almost everything - any ideas on this one?

Dont pick on me  I've only been here five minute :o but in my 6/7 yrs of Galaxy ownership I think I've suffered from most problems that seem to crop up on here :( as for a filter device to prevent the scuttle drains blocking? there was a quick fix put into place by Ford when this first started occur :o they installed a pair of sponge filters that mounted into the corners where the drains are located, these filtered out the large debri and allowed the water to pass through and hopefully stopped the drains from blocking? it may be worth while seeing if a couple of cheap pan scrubbers stuck in the corners would do the same job? the ones with the coarse sponge on one side and fine soft sponge on the other?

the other fix was a splash guard on the pollen filter houseing! and a uprated resistor pack to allow the fan to spin faster and suck harder to overcome this restriction  oh! and then was the remodeling of the carbon canister fixing bracket in the drivers side wheel arch so it sits lower! as it presently sits over the drain hole DOH!

that enough ideas for you? :o

Dunno about the scuttle drains but I'd have a field day if they told me it wasn't covered by warranty!

Heck, this was me 1 month ago!

I took my Galaxy into a BT Fleet garage for a heater problem and came out with the radio volume going up and down (not normal AVC opertion, this was buggered and turning off AVC fixed it). Then my parking sensors failed in exactly the same way as yours did. Did not notice the wipers but then I don't think I used them.

Took it back to the garage who ended up replacing the reversing control unit and another unit that was called something like a speaker control unit also situated under the passenger seat that must detect vehicle noise and control the radio AVC and wipers I guess!

Mine was water in the footwell and my rear washer hose had come adrift. I'm not sure about these scuttles but I want to chack them, how can I find them ?

Regards,

Paul

You can try either washing them through with a hose - Open the Bonnet and they are down the back where the hinges are - you will see there is usually a collection of leaves etc. The safest though tedious way is to remove the Inner wheel arch liners - they are plastic and secured by torx screws - you can then see the flap valves (made of plastic) that usually stop all the rubbish and water clearing - you can either just clear them or take them off - this last seems to cause no problems but does seem to keep them clear. Once cleared you should ensure that you clear out any leaves etc that get in.

Thanks for the information.

Look from what I read here this is not an uncommon problem so I will go and check these out.

Thanks again.

Hello all...just an update. The water ingress came back.....Finally found out what it was. It was due to a seam in the bulkhead (top right handside, as from the passenger footwell). Used some sealer...now no water.

On another issue, the booster heater (near the passenger rear seat, underside), is there a fuse/relay that controls the unit? Does anyone know which one and where it is?

Thanks
