pj_andrew Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 I need to get bars and a roof box sorted for a fully loaded family holiday in two weeks. (Galaxy already has rails). Anyone got any opinions/experience ? I see Halfords stock the Thule bars ( Quote
Guest manwithtool Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 I have a similar problem, me and the family (4) plus grandparents (2) plus 6 cases, going to the air port. I think I should be able to fit it all in (just). But my backup plan is to use the Bike rack that slots onto the towbar fitting and strap 1 or 2 cases to that....? Should do it I think, and much cheaper and more useful than the roof bars and box. Just a thought ! Quote
Guest Boggler Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 I bought the Thule Roof bars from Halfords, and a Halfords box. Bars OK but adjuster has come away on two (sometimes have to get a pair of pliars out). If you are close enough to me and only want them for a fortnight or so I could lend you mine (suitable refundable deposit, say your wife and kids lol). I'm in Maidenhead by the way. pj_andrew Posted March 12, 2003 Author Report Posted March 12, 2003 Hey, that is a very kind offer. However, we have bookings for a week in Cornwall, a week up North, two weeks in East Anglia, another week even further up North, and a week in Wales. So I'll need to get some kit on a more permanent basis. (and then a loan for all the petrol :-)) I've fished around and there are sites that specialise in roof bars, and boxes, and cheaper than Halfords. There's quite a choice when you look around. I'll post something else when I get some more useful info and experience. Quote
Guest Boggler Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 No problem, by the way have you thought about a trailer? I also have a small (4x4) box trailer. I find you can get substantially more in that than even the largest roof box. My family holidays usually end up as both roof box and trailer, there again the old bus is quite happy with this. Quote
BigRik13 Posted July 4, 2012 Report Posted July 4, 2012 I made a roof rack from a few bits of 2x2 stud walling timbers, and bungee strap it to the roof rails. Not pretty but it was dirt cheap. I've transported the mower to the allotment countless times and could easily bungee a load of cases to it. Quote
