On my way to Christchurch this morning, obeying every speed limit. Then, so that I can get past a car with (probably) no piston rings, and let a high speed car behind me get past, I nudged 90mph indicated....

Just then I noticed the front of a white car sticking out...

Applied the brakes, and I think I got back down to 70mph by the time I could see the cop with his gun resting on the roof of the jam butty.

But you never know - these things can read speed an awful long way away...

So, I'll just wait and see if the 'dreaded' arrives in the post.

In the meantime, am I the only one who would rather see a few more cops on the roads and less money making cameras? The cops time would have been well spent IMHO pulling over the guy with the busted engine - old Vectra, probably uninsured, no tax...

if the cop was there holding the laser, they would have come after you and pulled you over and issued the ticket,

You will only receive a ticket in the post if it was a mobile camera,

if the cop was holding the device it probably wasn't a camera these are normally fitted in the back of a van.

sounds like you had a lucky escape.

I think that cameras are a good idea when used correctly. fixed cameras are a waste of time really as they only protect about 50 yds of road, the best ones are the SPECS average speed cameras as they calculate the speed over a few miles which means you have to stick to the limits over that entire distance.

the new ANPR Number plate recognition systems used by the police are reducing the amount of dodgy uninsured, untaxed and NO mot drivers which can only be a good thing

Got to agree with you dave m,,,,,,,,,,,if you speed then you pay the penalty

There using the specs at roadworks on the m74,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,they all wait till the last sec before slowing to the posted 40mph,,,,,very funny

i was under the impresstion that theres normally a bike cop further down the road who catches up to you then nicks you?

They usually only put the cop on the bike down the road to stop you if its using 'ANPR', which is Automatic Number Plate Recognition System. This can pick up on, no insurance, no or outdated tax, stolen vehicles etc etc, but not speeding motorists. Its an excellent system that gets to the people who make the likes of us pay more insurance.

I'm all for catching anyone who does wrong - but please don't confuse these systems for the reason we are paying huge premiums - Thats simply because a) they can, and B) they are robbing bastards!!

If every illegal driver suddenly started paying insurance all that would happen is that the Insurance companies would get a windfall - I mean when did you last get a letter from an Insurance company telling you your premium is going down! It just doesn't happen.

I reall do believe if the punishments for illegal driving were the loss of the vehicle (no matter who actually owns it - be it personal company or hire) then we might see a reduction in this sort of behaviour.

Any drunk, dangerous Driver, No Insurance, etc - Crush the car - that way we have less cars on the road and the bastards get to pay as other have to.

Today's a rant day!!

Preferably with the driver still in it !!!!

Those kind of people also tend to be serial offenders as well.

I know of someone who didnt have a licence and just used to buy cars with x months tax on them and then replace the vehicle when the tax ran out.

Obviously because of havng no licence, it follows that he also didnt have any insurance.

I laugh at people who get caught by mobile speed camera's unless the copper is hiding behind a tree and jumps out at the last second,a friend of mine was telling me that he was worried becouse if he gets another point on his licence he will lose it and had just been flashed,I asked him where was it he replied on a main street in town a static one, he could'nt understand why I laughed at him,my view is if you can't see a big yellow box on the side of the road what chance do you have of seeing a small child.

Is that a 2 foot tall child when your looking for boxes that are seven feet up in the air? The new boxes are about 12 foot up and harder to catch your eye btw.

It is far easier to learn how not to speed to be honest.

My point being if you are speeding you should be alert,ie not on a mobile phone not changing your cd on the stereo or trying to tune into a better radio station or gazing into your partners eyes thinking about the night ahead  .

But at the end of the day MM is quite correct Don't speed.

I myself have been flashed by cameras on more than one occasion, however i still have a clean licence, because i assume the cameras had no film in etc

I don't think many drivers can say they never break the speed limits, it is quite easy to creep a bit over the limit and not realise.

just wait till they introduce a satellite based speeding detection system. then no one will have a clean licence

two little snippets that appeared somewhere in the press lately.

A large proportion of parking tickets can be cancelled itf the recipient has a reasonable case and is persistent in protesting.

Most people give up too easily it seems but, if there is a genuine reason, you can get it cancelled.

Also, the police are instructed to take no action in cases such as this, e.g. a brief spurt to avoid a potentially dangerous situation.

I cannot verify either of these but it does seem to be the general case although some of the officals can be absolute b@$
