Simp Posted March 16, 2006 Report Posted March 16, 2006 Hi Foks - can anyone advise me what to put on my windowscreen to stop the blades smearing. The crap I have on there at present is also causing the blades to judder? Thanks S Quote
dave_m Posted March 17, 2006 Report Posted March 17, 2006 clean the screen with vinegar, this works well and is cheap. Quote

Masked Marauder Posted March 17, 2006 Report Posted March 17, 2006 And do the wiper blades with it too. Quote
mumof4 Posted March 17, 2006 Report Posted March 17, 2006 do you just pour it on??or do you use it with a cloth? Quote
Guest reefer Posted March 17, 2006 Report Posted March 17, 2006 Hi Mum of 4,I usaully clean the screen first then it dryor dry with kitchen paper towel. Soak a paper towel with vinegar and clean the screen. Then before lowering the wiper blades back clean the wiper blade edges.Seems to work fine, no more smears for a while. I also use Halfords screen wash addative too in the washer water. Quote
marinabrid Posted March 17, 2006 Report Posted March 17, 2006 also try a product called clearalex its been about for years and seems to have magical properties that makes wiping a pleasure ! get it here cheapMy Webpage Quote
Scorpiorefugee Posted March 17, 2006 Report Posted March 17, 2006 Martin, I've used Rainex for years and on some cars it almost does away with the need for wipers other than to swish away the grime. I've actually been driving on the motoway at the legal speed and been unaware of the pouring rain until noticing that other cars have their wipers on max. That was in a Merc 190 and it doesn't seem to be as effective on the array of Fords that I've had but it makes an enormous difference in wet night time conditions. It's effectiveness depends on screen shape/angle and speed etc. I'm sure that you'll have tried it. How does it compare with your product? Ron Quote
gregers Posted March 17, 2006 Report Posted March 17, 2006 i was always told newspaper was the best thing to use to clean a windscreen leaves no smears Quote
Denis Posted March 18, 2006 Report Posted March 18, 2006 Yeah I use newspaper when I clean the inside of my windows, only for the final drying/ polishing bit, works a treat. I've been using Rain-x on the windscreen for a few months, since I read about it on here. It works really well though has to be reapplied frequently as the wipers (if you do use them) seem to wear it away. Quote
marinabrid Posted March 18, 2006 Report Posted March 18, 2006 you can get rain x here at my shop as well cheap for forum members as is everything if you tell me !ONLINE SHOP Quote
Davetheref Posted March 20, 2006 Report Posted March 20, 2006 one question about Rainx. If you put it on, can it also be removed easily if you dont like it? Quote
RussT Posted March 20, 2006 Report Posted March 20, 2006 I've used RainX, and I find it does do the Job of repelling the rain.BUT I found when I need to use the wipers it makes then judder and also lightly smears the screen.I thought it was the way I applied it so I read the instruction again and re-applied it. Still no change. So now I only use it on the Blind Spot on my Mk1 Gal (left and right side of the window screen that the wipers do not touch) it works great there. Quote
Scorpiorefugee Posted March 20, 2006 Report Posted March 20, 2006 The only problem I've had with rainex is that on damp mornings the fine mist can be disconcerting until the heater warms up. The smearing is probably caused by other contaminants or excessive aplication. I find a small bottle lasts me for about 5 years and I do loads of miles but use the wipers and washers sparingly. i.e. refil the washer bottle only once or twice a year. I can't imagine that it is easy to remove but white spirit and patience may do it Quote
Davetheref Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 I've just bought some from Ebay. From that last reply on here does it mean it actually coats the surface of the screen with something that could possibly be a problem getting off if you dont like it ? Quote
Scorpiorefugee Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 I'm afraid so but I know of no-one who has found it necessary. It has to give the screen a coating to work and it has to be durable for the same reason. It does dissipate naturally after a few weeks/ months but I cannot believe that it could cause a serious problem. The wipers remove it slowly leaving a coating where the wipers don't clear, which can be seen in certain conditions, especially damp or rain, but that goes also eventually. I have never tried to remove it. Quote
mumof4 Posted March 22, 2006 Report Posted March 22, 2006 My hubby tried this once..not sure if he put it on right but i refuse to let him reapply it as the rain would just sit on the screen! :( Quote
Scorpiorefugee Posted March 22, 2006 Report Posted March 22, 2006 Just kick a wheel and watch it run off. :D Quote
