Hi all....... i've done a search but cant seem to find an exact answer to my question.

I'm considering buying a sat nav system, probably a Tom Tom, as every one but every one i ask pushes them (so much so, you'd think it was the only make on the market..!). Can anyone tell me if they also have one of these 'mobile' systems and experience any problems with the heated screen interfering with the working/reception of the gadget..?

Cheers all.

Nick.

I have used TomTom for more than a year using a PDA with a GPS antenna on the dashboard and experienced no problems from the heated windscreen.

Used to have a Navman Jacket fitted to a iPAQ PDA and as long as you had it positioned in the corner of the windscreen (where there was a gap in the heating elements) it used to work fine.

Now I use a cheapo Bluetooth GPS from eBay with my phone that runs TomTom and it works great regardless of where its sat on the dashboard (I actually wait till I get a signal then chuck it in the top central compartment).

The TomTom units ability to get a GPS fix varies with the models out there. Might be also worth mentioning that thieves are targetting cars with GPS mounts so you might want to place the unit and the mount out of sight when leaving the car.

you can get external aerials for most sat nav units. I found that with an internal antenna i would get about 5 satellites, both on my TomTom PDA System and Autoroute 2006 Laptop GPS System which works fine, however i found when in central london due to the density and height of the buildings i was losing the signal which caused me to get horribly lost!!!

I have permenantly installed an external gps aerial on the roof and now pick up 10,11 and sometimes 12 satellites which makes the system much more accurate and works great even in central london.

I've had no problems with any GPS system, including TOMTOM through my heated screen.

I have a MIO 168 with TomTom5 Software, the built in antenna seems to work fine. The unit comes with an additional magnetic antenna, if you need it, that simply sticks to the roof.

I always position the unit at the base of the windscreen near to the middle.

The MIO does exactly the same job as a TOMTOM but has the added benefit of being a handheld computer as well (PDA) with Word, Excel etc plus it will play mp3's. A Jack of all trades but it still navigates fine.

Likewise with a Mio 168 running Tom Tom 5. I have mine positioned at the bottom right of screen and just using the built in attenna. Always get a good signal and have never needed to use the attenna extension lead supplied.
