bigdaddy Posted March 14, 2006 Report Posted March 14, 2006 mo4 do a search the stopping i think is it siezing up,,,you need to strip it all out clean and grease the spindles it has been covered before I found that when i replaced the blades the juddering stopped Quote

gregers Posted March 14, 2006 Report Posted March 14, 2006 fleeced now you want to go and get them from fords now thats being fleeced@ Quote
smoggy7 Posted March 14, 2006 Report Posted March 14, 2006 hi mum of 4 you cant go wrong ive just redone mine and it took just over 2 hours as one spindle was seized solid, it makes the motor work twice as hard to get the wipers to go across the screen thats why its juddering, you take off the wiper nuts x2 then the long black plastic has clips under it they unclip from the holes then if you look carefully you will see a few 10 mil bolts under the next bit you have to get at all these once these are off then you should see 3 brass nuts that hold the wiper unit on take all 3 off unclip the wire connector and the whole unit will come out take to a bench if possible and carefully take off the c clip dont loose this bit as it holds the spindle in place pull spindle through clean with wire wool or wet and dry then regrease put back together , if spindle is seized solid hold in a vice and while spraying with wd40 pull back and forth to release it a little at a time until it comes loose enough to hit through be carefull when hittting the spindle , once this is all done then can be replaced and hopefully this should make a hell of a difference it did on mine i was helped here also with this and i agree with the guys and girls here it makes a difference if someone has done the work to help others out is great hope you get there all the best and thanks by the way for the words of comfort from you when i lost me mum thanks getting there slowly as of course i miss her terrible as you only get one mum she was the best thanks all smoggy Quote
mumof4 Posted March 14, 2006 Author Report Posted March 14, 2006 Hi smoggy..thanks for all that and im glad to hear that your are getting there. It will be a long road but the grief will get less as time goes by. 1...I dont have a vice.2...what do i regrease with?3...Take care hun.xx Quote
lazyb5 Posted March 14, 2006 Report Posted March 14, 2006 Hi mo4 ,hi smogi usually regrease things especially bearing surfaces with castrol lsm3 grease(think thats it) its a high melting point grease containing molybdenum it works great. Think i might do this as well at the weekend rather than wait for it to seize up cause i think my gaks the same years as yours mo4. Quote
Bigjeeze Posted March 14, 2006 Report Posted March 14, 2006 1...I dont have a vice.2...what do i regrease with? 1... Not what it seems like to us on here! :( :o 2... Grease? <_> Seriously - you need to ascertain if the blades or the spindles are at fault. Why not try a little (iI mean littel) bit of washing up liquid on the screen with plenty of water - if that fixes it then it could be blades - If not then the chances are it's the spindles. For now if you don't have the facilities then try carefully puting some WD40 or similar down the spindle shafts. Be careful not to get it on the glass. That might free them off somewhat. If they are sticking you will need to do something about it as if you leave it could end up with a burned out wiper motor and that ain't cheap! Quote
mumof4 Posted March 15, 2006 Author Report Posted March 15, 2006 right..i think ive got to the bottom of the wipers (only think mind).as you are sat in the car..the left blade is only half touching the windscreen..the bottom half of the blade is really dragging on the screen while the top half of it is not even touching the screen..there is about a 1-2 cm gap!.it looks like the arm itself is bent..it is straight..if you get what im saying.the right arm is fine.the whole wiper is touching the screen.hmm....is the left supposed toi be like this or is it supposed to be flush???guess i know the answer to thaqt. can the arm be bent back into place with out breaking it?or will i need to buy a new arm??the juddering is caused by the fact that the bottom half of the left blade is really being pushed against the screen..i think this may be why both arms are juddering because of the pressure on the one arm. hmm..got me???lost myself i think! the left arm is straight even though i think it should be curved!. Quote
Guest neil_wiles Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 M You need new blades thats all the way they are sat means the "joints" in the blade itself are seized and that will cause not only judder but total failure to clear the screen. now if you lift the wipers off the screen and then operate the wipers do they move smoothly or is it only when the blades are touching the screen. If they are smooth when lifted its certainly the blade, if judder occurs with the blades off the screen then its the swivel post siezed and not just the blade. Quote
mumof4 Posted March 15, 2006 Author Report Posted March 15, 2006 Right...freel a prat now...the blade was not even fixed onto the arm properly..you know the hook bit on the arm where you clip the blade in????well the blade just keeps slipping out of that hook bit where the other blade is firmly fixed in place. there is no noticable juddering when the blades are upright. Quote
bigdaddy Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 I just binned 2 bags of clips last week,,,,,,,, :o Think you can buy the clips seperate from the blades,,,,,,,,,,from halfords ;) Quote
mumof4 Posted March 16, 2006 Author Report Posted March 16, 2006 Ahh..so the bit that keeps sliding out of the hook bit isnt supposed to?? Quote
NikNak Posted March 16, 2006 Report Posted March 16, 2006 Try having a look at the wiper that works fine, and see how that is fitted...... then examine the wonky wiper, it's my bet that it's just not 'clipped' in place correctly. :) Nick Quote
mumof4 Posted March 16, 2006 Author Report Posted March 16, 2006 it wont clip in place..the other wiper does not move when wiggled..but this wiper just slides in and out of the hook so all you see is a hook!!if that black clip is supposed to stay in the hook then the clip is broke and i need a new one as today when it was raining the black thing slipped out of the metal hook. Quote
Scorpiorefugee Posted March 16, 2006 Report Posted March 16, 2006 Oh dear! :D Will it never end? :D It's beginning to look like a case of "Who sold you this then?" At least you've got lots of help. :) Quote
mumof4 Posted March 17, 2006 Author Report Posted March 17, 2006 Sigh....we bought it at andrews in lincoln...gave it a good looking over and we didnt see any probs with it...had it 3 years now and most of the probs started appearing about a year ago...just out of warrenty!!(as always). Though i must say that our probs dont seem to be as bad as others...we dont have an indoor swimming pool or our own smoke machine!!most i think is cosmetic and little things..well..any one hear of a mk2 bumper and front panel going, let me know. :) Quote
Zork Posted March 23, 2006 Report Posted March 23, 2006 Hi just a couple of points that may be of interest. I've just stripped down my wiper linkeage. Spindle one took about half an hour to tap out using a hammer and WD40, the other took an hour and a half. They were seized almost solid and could barely be moved by hand, so patience is the key here. Apart from cleaning the spindle I cleaned the bushes with a piece of dowling in a cordless drill with wire wool wrapped around it, then used valve grinding paste on the spindle in the bush. It now spins around freely. The lubricant i used was 'copperslip' a non seizing 'thin' grease. Make sure the nut ( or preferably a spare nut) is on the thread when you tap it out. You may also need something to knock the spindle through the bush once the thread has disappeared, something made of copper or ally will do. ( Smaller than the hole of course). Don't x thread the nut before you hit it like I did and spent Quote
mumof4 Posted March 23, 2006 Author Report Posted March 23, 2006 thanks for the info ,,wipers stopped today in the upright position.took em a while to get going again. Quote
bigdaddy Posted March 24, 2006 Report Posted March 24, 2006 mo4,,,,sorry, but it sounds u need to get them stripped and greased sooner than later Quote
