Guest pellings Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 Hello, Since buying my 2002 1.9 Ghia last March I have had continued problems in getting the car off my sloping drive during the cold mornings. Basically, as soon as I let the clutch out and give it some revs, thje engine doesn't respond properly and needs to be revved very hard before it will climb the slope. Usually, after the car is on the flat its fine although sometimes it can be hesitant for the first 35 metres or so. So far the dealer has changed the Maff sensor, the turbo (thank heavens for the warranty!) as well as a solenoid. None of these have done the trick. Has anyone else experienced similar problems when parking overnight on a slope? Also, when the engine is cold I can hear a ticking noise which comes and goes and sounds as though it is coming from underneath the front passenger seat/footwell. The dealer (an independant not franchised) has been very sympathetic but I think he's starting to think I'm making this all up. Thanks Quote
Masked Marauder Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 The ticking is the metering pump for the auxiliary heater. I have no idea about the other problem though. Quote
Guest pellings Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 Thanks for that. Two Ford main dealers have been unable to diagnose the ticking noise and neither has the supplying dealer. I'll be on the phone this afternoon asking them to check the metering pump! Thanks again Quote
NikpV Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 Two Ford main dealers have been unable to diagnose the ticking noise and neither has the supplying dealer. I thought this was quite common and not really a problem - apart from the irritating click that is    Quote
dave_m Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 does it only happen when its been parked on a slope?? could be a problem with fuel reaching the engine, The revving makes the fuel pump go faster so supplies more fuel hence the problem goes away. the ticking is the metering pump for the aux heater and they all seem to tick so i assume this is normal. chromedome Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 It could be glow plugs. especially on cold mornings. As far as I know the glow plugs assist the running of the engine when it's cold, not only the starting of the engine. When the engine warms the glow plugs are not used. You watch.........someone will correct me. Quote
Guest pellings Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 Parking on the slope certainly seems to make the problem worse. I've never actually parked it on the flat during the colder months so can't be certain whether it's the slope (and a fuel supply problem) that is the cause. Quote

As far as I know the glow plugs assist the running of the engine when it's cold, not only the starting of the engine. When the engine warms the glow plugs are not used. You watch.........someone will correct me. I think also that Glow plugs could be at fault. When the engine starts if all the cylinders aren't firing properly then you would have poor pulling power - The fact that it works fine once warm would suggest Glow plugs are not working. As for the metering pump ticking - they all do - it's not a fault. Quote
Guest pellings Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 Thanks for all of your replies. I'm really impressed with how many helpful people there are out there. I will raise the issue of the glowplugs with the dealer. Does anyone know roughly how much these are to replace and how long it would take? As for the metering pump, I guess I'll just leave it as is then. Seems a shame that such an irritating (it is to me anyway) gremlin should be seen as acceptable. Quote
Bigjeeze Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/index.ph...03&hl=glowplugs Take a look at these posts - and it might be a good idea to take this to your mechanic  Quote
NikNak Posted March 19, 2006 Report Posted March 19, 2006 Ticking noise....... yep, got the same on mine too. Took it back to main dealer when i first got it, and they said 'they weren't aware of any problems, none had been reported before'....... i.e. salesman / mechanic speak for 'dont admit to there being a know fault'. That's when i first found this forum, and remember finding somthing about a certain type of solenoid fitted to certain types of model that gave no problems at all........ however, that was ages ago, and be blowed if i can remember where i managed to find it.. Ok, i'm gonna go and crawl back into my pit now...... Nick.
