Guest garyfriend Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 Hi everyone, great site! I have an annoying problem with my 2.3 Zetec (1999) - at anything over 40mph you can hear a wind noise like there's a window slightly open (which there isn't). The noise increases in volume when the speed does. No noise when stationary or when below 40mph - no other rumbling noises either! Family are undecided where the wind/whistle noise comes from but I personally think it's coming from the roof bars which were fitted over a year ago, so shouldn't be them either? Any ideas guys? Masked Marauder Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 Check the plastic panel along the front, just under the windscreen the bit the wiper arms come through. It is only held on with thin clips and they break off. Failing that, when driving down the road press the top front cormer of the doors and see if the noise changes. Quote
Guest garyfriend Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 Someone on another forum has suggested a belt tensioner? Sorry for ignorance - what is this? His apparently sheared after ignoring similar sounds?? Anyone any ideas on this? Apologies for ignorance! Quote
chevron169 Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 I've had noises also. There have been 2 sources on mine:- 1) Door mirror - mine has a non original cowling on the back of the unit which doesn't quite fit as well as the original and produces an annoying whistle. 2) Noisy belt tensioners - this noise has always been quite metallic and tends to come and go. Had for this for many many k's. The belt it'self may also be slipping of course. You'll be able to hear these clearly from under the bonnet from the left of the engine but don't try at 40 mph. Seriously, my screechings from this area only happen at idle or low speed then disappear when you've gathered speed or when the engine's warm so may not be this. Quote
bigdaddy Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 Yeah,,,I have the same problem,,,,,i found the faster you go the noisier it got,,,,,,i always thought it was the top of the doors opening slightly and letting the wind etc in,,,when travelling at speed and i noticed it only happened on the front two doors Quote
Guest MATT Posted March 14, 2006 Report Posted March 14, 2006 at speed, wind noise seems common, i last read that its because of the large wing mirrors, oncoming air is forced into the small gap, between the top of the mirror, and car body. the noise is dramatically increased, when traveling into strong winds. norwichbluenose Posted March 14, 2006 Report Posted March 14, 2006 The problem is the decal below the front windscreen (covers the drain scuttle and wiper linkage) its problay some of the drain vents causing the noise when air passes over it at speed. mine does at 50-60 mph. I have learn to live with it hope this helps Quote
chauf4 Posted October 28, 2006 Report Posted October 28, 2006 I have had a problem with this very thing aswell. To date I have had my Gal for four days and on day two, when I took it on the motorway for the first time, I noticed a noise like a windy whistle noise. At a steady speed above 50mph or so the noise would be there more often than not and would get louder and quieter according to the actual wind hitting the car. I think I have solved my problem. I noticed the passenger side rubber seal on the windscreen was out of place and had slightly twisted itself down near to the bonnet. So naturally I got hold of the thing untwisted it and fixed it back into place. Took it for a high speed spin and the wind/whistle noise no longer seems to be there. Sometimes these things seem to be so simple to solve but it's just the luck of spotting it in the first place. I mean I could have gone on for months with this problem without seeing it. Maybe i was just lucky. Hope that if anyone else has similar noises that the fix for it is this easy. Quote
seatkid Posted October 29, 2006 Report Posted October 29, 2006 The noise is due to a gap somewhere where there should'nt be one. Along with previous suggestions, Check the rubber strip in the roof channels esp near the front windscreen. It should be trimmed neatly in line with the edge of the windscreen, and closed along the length of the channels. Try some foam sealing strip in the door mirror swivel joint, this is where my whistle came from. Also check your door(s) sealing, damage to the strip and whether the door is correctly aligned (has it been in an accident?) Quote
anadin Posted October 29, 2006 Report Posted October 29, 2006 cheap beans can also be a factor, i found changing brands helped -_- -_- Quote
mumof4 Posted October 29, 2006 Report Posted October 29, 2006 I have a nice rattle when i hit speed..the passenger side wiper keeps trying to take off..but i put up with it as it tells me what speed im doing ..faster the rattle..the faster the car is going...quite comforting really. -_- Quote
El Dingo Posted October 29, 2006 Report Posted October 29, 2006 Put in a cd and hit the volume That's what I do to drown out the awful clattering of the engine in my Audi diesel company car... -_- Quote
sparky Paul Posted October 29, 2006 Report Posted October 29, 2006 Mine has a whistle caused by the driver's side door mirror - put your hand over the gap between the mirror body and the mount and the whistle disappears. I think I got used to it! Quote
Guest HairyPlateEater Posted October 29, 2006 Report Posted October 29, 2006 Mine has a whistle caused by the driver's side door mirror - put your hand over the gap between the mirror body and the mount and the whistle disappears. I think I got used to it! Mine is exactly the same ... just driver's side! no difference in gap or position of passenger side mirror so cant understand it! Annoys the hell out of me! Quote
Guest gooner52 Posted October 29, 2006 Report Posted October 29, 2006 loads of help on this at www.imoc.co.uk about wind noise from wing mirrors.. most of the time due ,to screws just to be replaced with new ones,as with age they dont seal up as good also packed out with a good sealent Quote
Scorpiorefugee Posted October 29, 2006 Report Posted October 29, 2006 Just a couple of observations. It has only happened recently. Has anything else happend which could tie in. If you think it's belt tensioner or something to do with the drive, try knocking it out of gear at 70ish to see if it changes. It might be worth checking your tyres. I had one make some funny noises which I learned to live with until one day I noticed that it was self destructing.. Quote
