andrew welsh1958 Posted March 12, 2006 Report Posted March 12, 2006 been having trouble with brake lights not working, was told faulty brake switch, if i change switch will i have to have it reset by local dealers on computer,or will it reset itself Quote
bigdaddy Posted March 12, 2006 Report Posted March 12, 2006 No need to have it reset!!!!,,,,it works all by itself :D Quote
johnb80 Posted March 12, 2006 Report Posted March 12, 2006 I don't see why it would need to be reset, it's not like a MAF or other sensor. A switch is either closed (short circuit) or open (broken wire) there are no in between conditions that the ECU would see as out of range. Do you have direct experience where VAG-COM has been needed to reset this? it's the first I've heard of it. Regards - John Quote
Masked Marauder Posted March 12, 2006 Report Posted March 12, 2006 I never had to clear any fault codes when I changed mine. Fault code was there, changed it, hooked up VAG-COM again, fault code was gone. Quote
bigdaddy Posted March 12, 2006 Report Posted March 12, 2006 Go to GSF or Ford or VW and get a brake switch,,,,,,better first to look at the faulty one ,,,,,,, to determine if it is a 2 pin or 4 pin plug,,,,,,,,,,,,,go home take of lower surround panel under steering wheel,,,at the foot pedals,,,,,,,,remove plug from brake switch and turn it anti clockwise or clockwise (((((Cant remember which way you turn it,,)))))and take it out,,,,,,,,fit new brake switch ,,,,,, refit the plug and panel surround,,,,,,,job done in 15 to 20 mins,,,,,,,,,,,,,NO RESET NEEDED ,,,,,, Quote
bigdaddy Posted March 12, 2006 Report Posted March 12, 2006 OK so what you mean is,,,,, the switch needs to be set,,,,not reset Quote
andrew welsh1958 Posted March 12, 2006 Author Report Posted March 12, 2006 changed both blue and black switches.brake lights now work!.but engine now running poorly(struggles to get to 70 .m.p.h or above) when on tick-over engine stumbles(does not run smooth) all indications in haynes manual point towards injectors, but was running better before brake lights started playing up, any ideas or info would be greatly appreciated as i am planing to visit my son in Germany in three weeks time(now starting to panic) Quote
Topbloke Posted March 12, 2006 Report Posted March 12, 2006 have you reset both switches as one works the lights and the other gives a signal to ecu if the ecu sees that the brake is applied via the ecu switch then it will cut fuel if may just be coincidence that you have a maf fault, but as you say it was okay prior to the switch prob Quote
andrew welsh1958 Posted March 12, 2006 Author Report Posted March 12, 2006 reconed maff fitted in aug 2005 Quote
bigdaddy Posted March 12, 2006 Report Posted March 12, 2006 Is the blue switch not part of the cruise control  Quote
andrew welsh1958 Posted March 13, 2006 Author Report Posted March 13, 2006 does not have cruise control Quote
Masked Marauder Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 The O/P asked the question will the switch need to be reset? the simple answer is yes  Your fudging the issue, he actually asked will it have to go on the dealers computer to be reset and you said yes, the switch needs to be reset. In actuality the switch twists in and that sets it. So you were wrong on both counts. Quote
bigdaddy Posted March 14, 2006 Report Posted March 14, 2006 Dont know if ford and vw are wrong,,,,but with the amount of posts on this site,,,,ford and vw get a lot of things wrong,,,,,  :o When i changed my brake switch,,,,I went to gsf and bought one,,,changed it outside there shop,,,,no reset ,, no setting the plunger,,,,,,,,I just twisted it in and all works fine  Quote
Topbloke Posted March 14, 2006 Report Posted March 14, 2006 you were lucky, it all depends how far you can press the pedal down when fitting , if servo full "or should that be empty" the pedal will go further down ,if its the other way round you may inadvertantly depress the plunger a few clics and it will need setting ie start car depress pedal pull plunger out as far as poss then release pedal! Quote
Masked Marauder Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 You don't press the pedal down when fitting, that is the point. It sets it's self to the hight of the pedal when the pedal is not being pressed down, so that when the pedal is pressed down it activates the switch. It is necessery to re-set the switch if you replace one that has previously fitted though. Quote
andrew welsh1958 Posted March 15, 2006 Author Report Posted March 15, 2006 well relaced the air mass meter again,- told garage it could be faulty and asked them to check it? after a lot of hassle they changed it, still running as if it is MISSING,(if it was a petrol i would say a plug,or plug lead?) but now starting to panic as i am planing a trip to germany in 3 weeks, also rang local vw service garage and asked why glow plug light was flashing ha said try and replace RELAY 109 that should fix problem------------wait and see Quote
Masked Marauder Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 It is necessery to re-set the switch if you replace one that has previously fitted though. what? If you re-fit an old switch you have to pull the pin out before you fit it. Quote
