Hi folks,

I am planning to change the timing belt on my 2001(Y) 1.9 TDi this weekend, and, after speaking to Lloyd at Hans Motors he gave me two prices for parts.

Both included the tensioner and relay roller but one also included a Timing Belt Vibration Damper.

Does anyone know if this should also be changed as a matter of course? I have searched the forums but only found a couple of references to red dust which may have come from the damper.

I was maybe thinking of changing the alternator belt & tensioner also, while I'm there.

Many thanks for any help.

There are 2 rollers. One is part of the tensioner assembly, and the other is basically a guide to stop the belt flapping around - ideally, both should be replaced when replacing the belt.

Hey Barlidge

The timing belt on mine is due anytime and I was just wondering what sort of prices you had been quoted.

Or is it an easy enough job to do yourself?? If so how long a job is it for a (reasonably competent) DIYer, and anything special to watch out for.
