My local engine 'remapping' mobile unit is offering a 40bhp power increase on the 115tdi PD tdi by remapping the engine managment unit. They offer a trial after the increase and remove the software if you're not happy with the improved performance, putting it back to as it was before. This costs around 300 quid. Seems like a large power increase for not a lot of money. Obviously increasing the turbo boost at lower revs etc, anyone any experience in this, as I am sceptical about it. :D But very tempted !

I to have been thinking about this (when i get my 150 ps) cool a nearly 200 bhp galaxy, but i think will have to wait a bit , wont this interfere with the warranty on a 05/55 ?

"Basically the change in the engine map is extremely hard to diagnose, even with the right equipment to compare it with. Secondly to say something has been modified you have to compare it to the original and with only one map on the car what can you compare it against to prove it has been modified." as quoted from company web site.

Anyone else taken this option ?

I've experienced a Revo re-map on a turbo petrol engine and found it to be quite startlingly different. In fact, bl**dy amazing.

IMHO use a known and reputable company, eg. Revo, Upsolute, AMD. Check other users experience, and not just on a web forum. Almost any dick can plug a VAG-com cable into your diagnostic port and claim to have added 20HP.

If you can't *really* feel the difference with a turbo petrol or turbo diesel then it ain't been done.

(Caveat - non-turbo engines can be chipped too, but the gains are minimal, or limited to 'aiding drivability' rather than real power hikes.)

Some dealers are quite happy about chipping - if you are worried, why not ask what their attitude is, and whether they would honour the warranty? (The above mentioned companies claim that their products cannot be detected during a routine service.)

I have a factory 150bhp TDi and have been told by colleagues in Germany and Austria that the 150bhp 1.9 TDi was a step too far. Apparently they (VW) had loads of problems especially with Golfs being used on the Autobahns popping the engines.

I'm led to believe that 150bhp is really as much as this engine will do with relative safety, hence they have moved more models than initially expected to the 2.0 TDi

Just a word of caution for anyone risking their warranty, but saying that the performance on mine is good, although it does drink oil if it gets booted for long journeys.

I have never owned a diesel always a petrol head  which is why the change over to a good and pretty quick 150 ps tdi,but reading that a new engine can drink oil ,now that worries me,is this a standard thing to expect on a diesel?

The short answer is yes.

The long answer is that VAG engines, multivalve in particular, are well known for highish oil usage. (The TDi engines in the Galaxy are VAG sourced.)

Some of this is valve stem leakage, but some of it can be due to the piston rings not bedding in properly (insufficient revs during run-in) or cylinder scoring (caning it during run-in).

(If you are a petrol head, do you *really* want a diesel???)
